Hi a couple of months ago I decided to start taking Magnesium Oxide 250 mg to see if it would help with tiredness. I know that having Hashimotos/Underactive Thyroid we can lack certain vitamins. I can’t believe the difference it’s made! I take one tablet in the evening and I have been waking up feeling rested something which I haven’t felt for years!! I just hope it continues. I was also thinking of adding some Vitamin D and maybe Zinc but I wouldn’t like them to do more harm than good in the long run. Even though my GP did say that just because I had an underactive thyroid it didn’t mean that I couldn’t take vitamins! Would love to hear from anyone who feels that vitamins have helped them and whether you think they are beneficial.

Vitamin supplements can help when we have low levels or deficiencies and low levels can cause symptoms. The only way we can know if we need to supplement is to test, it's not a good idea to take any without checking levels first. Some vitamins are fat soluble and any excess is stored, eg. Vit D and excess can lead to toxicity. Too much iron can also be bad for us. Vit D needs to be dosed appropriately to reach the recommended level from the person's current level and that could be different for everyone, and once the recommended level is reached then a maintenance level is required and again that could be different for everyone, so regular testing is recommended when supplementing with Vit D and dose adjustments made when necessary to avoid toxicity. Too much iron is as bad as too little so again it's essential to test to know if we need to supplement and if supplementing then regular monitoring to check levels is important.
We always advise testing the following:
Vit D
B12
Folate
Ferritin
Magnesium Oxide is not the best form of magnesium to take, it's poorly absorbed and is more useful for it's laxative properties. There are many forms which help in different ways so it's a good idea to choose the form that suits us best. The following articles discuss this:
