Hello, I am really tired of suffering for many years (I am 47 years old) of premenstrual dysphoric syndrome and I have noticed that it has worsened since I had my thyroidectomy, I am really desperate, I have no quality of life.
My Gyno recommended surgery because I also have a cyst in each ovary.
I have read about women whose life changed positively after that decision.
Please share your experiences.
Thanks in advance.

I haven’t had a thyroidectomy(mines hashis) but I did have a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo oophorectomy in Feb this year due to endosalpingiosis and adenomyosis. I’d spent years with constant bleeding, I was on constant ferrous fumerate due to being anaemic, in pain and eventually I had a cyst that ruptured. I’ve never felt pain like that, not even labour!
I can honestly say it was the best thing I’ve ever had done and I just wish they’d done it years ago! Mine was all performed via keyhole surgery and apart from the initial couple of days post surgery I had very little pain x
Hi Emiloulou, thank you for you response, could you share with me your experience after hysterectomy and oophorectomy ?, have you become very depressed ?, are you taking hormone replacement?
The reason for my TT was because I had my thyroid gland full of nodules due to the hashimotos.
I’ve been absolutely fine, no depression at all but I’ve always been a glass half full type of person so maybe that helped.
I do take hrt as I was no where near menopause however I had to wait 4 weeks for the histology to come back on my ovaries. Thankfully despite looking suspicious they were fine so as I was experiencing hot flushes etc I was started on the hrt.
My first question would be: are you sure you're optimally medicated for your thyroid? Because it doesn't sound as if you are. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I had a hysterectomy long before I was diagnosed, because none of the useless doctors I saw about my problems had any idea there could be a thyroid connection. And, I'm somewhat bitter about that. Before you take such a drastic step, it really would be better to made sure your dose and type of thyroid medication is right. And, it probably isn't, because doctors don't know how to adequately treat post TT.
If you post your last thyroid blood test results, with ranges, people will be able to advise.
Thank you for your response, I have been suffering from a premenstrual dysphoric disorder since I was diagnosed with hashimoto in 2005, not even if it was within the range, but after the TT (APRIL LAST YEAR), as I said, got worse, I'm still in the process of getting my optimal dose of levo, I think I am close to achieving it according to my last blood thyroid test, and maybe take the step of surgey.
Well, the two are related: PMD and hypothyroidism. And, it's really not surprising that you got worse after the TT. But, why did you have a TT? That's not the usual proceedure for Hashi's.
I expect you are in the process of getting your dose optimised, but optimal has nothing to do with blood test results - although they do give an indication that you're on the right track. Optimal is the way you feel, not a number, and judging by your symptoms, you are nowhere near optimal.
You don't have to share your results with us, of course, but do you even know what they are? And what your doctor is testing? If he's only testing the TSH then you will probably never get optimised.
I agree its connected. I had TT and I went straight into menopause after. A few years later at a regular smear test the nurse insisted on a full investigation immediately, a scan showed I was full of fibroids, the dr booked me for a hysterectomy, I had first appt with surgeon who was very matter of fact about the speed they appeared and grew, he said that was bad! 2nd appt with surgeon few months later for pre op he was amazed all fibroids had disappeared so he cancelled the op. The only change was I had been taking NDT for 3 months. He said it must have been the thyroid hormones that cleared it and the lack of them previously that caused it. My GP had dismissed all my claims of pain saying it was just part of the menopause and get use to it!
Before my TT I had 5 years of hell with periods, in hindsight I can see that my thyroid was already failing, it was removed because it was covered in nodules, granular (no idea what that meant) very enlarged and starting to block my windpipe. Before the NDT i couldnt think straight or make a decision, so until you are feeling better dont make any rash decisions.
I also had severe issues after my TT. I had to have a hysterectomy about a year after my TT. I'm so glad it's over. But I really feel that the TT created my issue. It's sad so many things are affected related to our thyroid. Good luck.
I had a sub-total thyroidectomy while 14 weeks pregnant with my third child, a daughter, in 1978. I was diagnosed with Graves in 1972 and gave birth to a son with special needs in 1976. My first son was born in 1968 and was fine. I had a hysterectomy in 1981 because of a torn ligament in stomach. Probably because of daughter and special needs son being born too close together, but possibly because of being hyperthyroid. In 2016 I had an Oophorectomy due to having cysts on both ovaries. Since February 2019 I have been on NDT and improving greatly apart from PA.
I really appreciate your response and I am sorry for what you have been through, I think I am becoming more and more convinced of the surgery since in any case I feel that I am in premenopause, I already have two daughters and according to what I have read many women do not regret of having done it.
Older post maybe lois71 is still here. I had hysterectomy in 2004 and thyroidectomy in 2016 (both surgeries were for cancer) I was put on estrogen that I still take turning 50 soon and I cant say I had any bad issues after hysterectomy, the only negative I had was not being able to have children (moved on)
NOW talking Thyroidectomy I've been living in hell and honestly don't see me coming back anytime soon "why" patients that had thyroidectomy tend to be throwaway patients once your "magical" lab levels are reached and I developed Psoriatic Arthritis right after Thyroidectomy that has made moving almost unbearable at times and the weight gain....went from thin and fit to fat in seriously a blink of and eye....would I do it again...never !
I'm currently looking at possible lymph node cancer (thyroid spread) and doubt I will do radiation.
