I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's a little over 2 years ago. I have done ALL the things. AIP, GF/DF, all the functional medicine tests, gut healing protocol, supplements, you name it. My antibodies never budge.
One of the few things I haven't tried that Izabella Wentz recommends is Wobenzym.
I've never tried it, however there are references to it in 14 public posts on HealthUnlocked (some are in different communities to this one). You might want to read them :
Are you trying to get rid of your antibodies? It is my understanding that once you have them you can’t get rid of them, though they might at times rise.
I managed to get my antibodies within normal range again, so I think it's possible. It's not to say they won't rise again in future, but for now they're ok.
My OH has coeliac disease though, and that's the definition of autoimmune disease: remove the trigger, and antibodies will be fall. It just depends what our trigger is.
That’s interesting. How did you manage it? With diet?
I had raised antibodies but I’ve never worried about it nor had them tested again because thyroxine made me feel better.
I don’t know that much about coeliac other than having to occasionally cater for someone who gets hospitalised if they eat gluten ( which I find terrifying).... so I know the gluten is a trigger for the villi, but does it also raise the antibodies?
I suppose what I’m asking is, does gluten raise the antibodies for your husband, and what do you think raises the antibodies for people with autoimmune thyroid disease? What is our trigger?
Or perhaps you don’t have autoimmune thyroid disease which would explain why they’re now within normal range and maybe it was a blip caused but I’ll health.
My head is hurting thinking about all this 🙄🤣 do I even want to know if I’m feeling well? 😂😂
In coeliac disease, eating gluten will cause antibodies to rise, and when you cut out gluten, your antibodies fall back into normal ranges. It's complicated though. The antibodies aren't the problem, they're the result of the problem, so getting them back to 0 doesn't mean you're cured, it just means you're managing your problem.
I think it's the same with other autoimmune diseases: I will always have hashi's, but I hope I can stop the damage where it is.
For me, the AIP diet and supplements helped, but I haven't figured out what my trigger is yet. It's a shame it hasn't helped the OP though.
Yes that's where I was confused because I didn't think it was the antibodies per se that were the problem.
I guess since I've been stable for well over 10 years now, my antibodies must not be too high, otherwise my thyroid would be worse.... or else my thyroid is completely destroyed and therefore the antibodies will disappear because there is nothing left to attack.
My goal is to slow or halt the autoimmune process. Thyroid meds can help with the symptoms, but the autoimmune process is still happening. Which means other organs and systems can be attacked (lupus, RA, MS, psoriasis, Sjogren's, etc). So I would really like to slow or halt that process in my body somehow.
I know! I was so hoping AIP would do the trick, along with targeted supplementation. It didn't do a single thing for me. I am still faithfully GF/DF, though, and only eat fresh, healthy foods. I am glad that it is helping you feel better! My thyroid was triggered by pregnancy, so I almost wonder if estrogen continues to trigger it or something? Who knows.
For some Hashi's sufferers just having high antibodies cause symptoms, and they possibly indicate how fast the illness is progressing and damaging the thyroid.
Things like going gluten and dairy free, improving nutrition and overall health can sometimes reduce them.
I haven’t. Have been considering it for a while but trying some other things first. I follow some LDN groups on FB and there seem to be lots of success stories (though sometimes it takes quite a while to take effect), and there seem to be very few side effects.
How long did you stick with AIP? Again that seems to be something that can take a while to make a difference. I’ve been doing it for 4 months and have seen a bit of an improvement in symptoms and my antibodies have been steadily declining
I did AIP strictly for 6 months. I kept getting worse rapidly and my antibodies never moved up or down. I switched to GF/DF after that. I had food testing done & my only reactive food was PINEAPPLE. So that was not helpful. Sigh.
I know 6 months seems like a long time but I've read it can take 2 years for some people so perhaps its worth doing for longer. I don't think you are necessarily always reactive to the foods that you will benefit from excluding and those tests are supposed to be unreliable - sigh indeed! I hope you find something that helps soon!
Yes I’ve tried Wobenzym, I only really needed 1 capsule before my heaviest meal of the day. Because I’m lactose intolerant, I am now using Dr. Mercola’s full spectrum enzymes, and I’ve never felt better. I had trouble digesting many foods, especially fats. Check out mercola.com
