Hi
I currently have a ferritin level of 8 and feel terrible. I have a history of low ferritin and it hasn’t been higher than 25 for 4 years. I’m no longer able to take iron tablets because of side effects. My gp Has recommended iron infusions and from the research I’ve done could greatly improve my quality of life . But as a gp she can’t write the prescription for this and needs a consultant too. The gastro consultant has just replied today ( I rang his secretary to find out his response) and he’s not willing to give me one as my hb is fine . He doesn’t seem to be aware of the side effects of low ferritin! And said it’s normal for menstrauting women! Has anyone with low ferritin but normal hb had a iron infusion through the nhs? I’m seeing my gp again tom morning to see what she says now? I’ve contacted a private heamatoloigst today who would be willing to give me an infusion after discussion but this will cost me £600, and I’m furious that I might have to pay this when it should be pried in the Nhs .
Thanks
