Hi everyone I've just been informed that I have began sleep walking could this be because of my graves disease hyperthyroidism? Or could it be my medication? I was taking 40mg carbimizole once a day although today this as changed I'm now taking 50mg carbimizole a day. My t3 and t4 levels are now normal but my free thyroxine as gone up to 7.7. This is why my endo as put me on a higher dose. What can cause sleep walking? How can I prevent it?

I sleep walk and have night terrors when my body is stressed and anxious.

Hi Kirstylstocks , I’m writing because although I have no idea what causes sleep walking I did it a lot in my younger/teen years but it seemed to stop as I got into my 20’s and my meds stabilised. I’m 57 now, and have had hypothyroidism from birth, diagnosed at 6 months. I always thought my sleepwalking was part of ‘me’ and I just grew out of it. Interesting to think it might be something else related to the thyroid condition.

Cheers!

From what I gather stress depression and anxiety can bring on sleep walking but now you tell me your story it's made me think even more could it be thyroid related thankyou for your comment

You’re welcome!

I can’t really remember much about triggers for the sleepwalking; the only occasion I recall was being told I tried to climb over the balcony of a second storey apartment and luckily my Mum had heard and followed me. I locked her outside as she told me to go back to bed and then Dad had to let her back in! I was about 11 then.

Somebody else has mentioned nightmares (sorry, forgot who posted) and I’ve had those throughout my life, moreso with triggers...like I hate snakes and can’t watch them on TV, see in magazines or real life at zoos, yet rubber ones don’t bother me. Another occasion was watching someone in an iron lung on a TV show. That night I was okay but a few days later I woke up screaming ‘don’t turn it off’! I’ve always had a vivid imagination! 😂

It can be. My folks took keys out of locks after that. I hope you find a way to resolve your sleep walking and keep safe in the meantime.
