And finally.... I feel a bit better!!

Hi all finally after god knows how long I finally feel a fair bit better! I have been on 100mcg Levo for about 10 mths for hashimotos and still felt drained And had bad brain fog, I have been gluten free for about 3 mths with no difference in symptoms, just over a week ago I started taking half a t3 with my Levo and although I thought it would take a while, pretty much straight away I felt better( not 100% but definitely much better) The question I have for every one is now that I feel better ( and because I only started feeling better the day I started t3) should I stop being gluten free?

Next week I am on holiday for a week and it would make life a lot easier in restaurants (not to mention being able to drink beer again!)

is there likely to be a benefit to me staying gf long term?

has anyone actually managed to reverse Hashimotos like Izabella Wentz etc promises?

Does Izabella Wentz promise you will reverse your Hashi's with a gluten-free diet? I think that's a very rash promise, because I've never heard of anyone actually achieving that. For a start, I doubt everyone's Hashi's is caused by gluten, there must be many triggers - some we don't even know about. So, I would take that with a pinch of salt. Besides, if the damage to your thyroid is already so bad that you need 100 mcg T4 and 12.5 mcg T3 to feel almost well, there's no way you'd be able to come off it just by being gluten-free.

You don't say if being gluten-free has helped you to feel better in any way. If not, try eating some gluten and see what happens. It might be that you just haven't noticed the help it's given you, what with one thing and another, but if you are sensitive to it and you start eating it again, you well feel worse. But maybe just before going on holiday is not the right time to try this experiment? I don't know. Only you can decide. But, one thing is clear, if you are gluten-sensitive, taking T3 is not going to allow you to eat gluten again. There's no connection. :)

Thanks greygoose, in hashimotos protocol she says some people can reverse hashimotos ( normal antibodies etc) by cutting out dairy and gluten and by healing a leaky gut. If this could be achieved in 6 mths or so then great, it’s definitely worth doing but in the just under 3 mths I’ve been gf I didn’t notice any change in symptoms ( Plus i never had digestive problem s from gluten) so not sure if worth the inconvenience or if long term I would get a benefit ( i know it’s awful to say but as Amy Myer / Izabella Wentz / dr axe are American I can’t help wonder if it’s faddish non fact based hyperbole)

I wonder too! But, that's not exactly a promise, saying that some people can… And, possibly they can IF they're caught early enough. But, with the lack of testing and reluctance to diagnose that we experience, the chances of catching it in the early stages are pretty thin. You are obviously not in the early stages, so it's highly unlikely that being gluten-free will reverse your Hashi's.

That said, you could still be gluten-sensitive. But, you will only know that by eating some gluten now, after three months abstinence, and see how you feel.

My logic to going gluten free was to see if I would feel better ( I didn’t notice a difference) and reduce the likelyhood of things getting

Worse and possibly having another autoimmune disease.

If I am going to reintroduce gluten I think it will involve a cold beer on a hot day and a kit kat, I thought I’d miss bread but no it’s the kit kat I want!

Well, I doubt if going gluten-free would stop you developing another autoimmune disease. But, if it didn't make you feel any better, then go for that ice-cold beer and see what happens. I know what you mean about kit-kats! yum! lol

There is gluten free beer and there is a gluten free kit kat made by Tesco. Just saying :)

I have had done extensive research on gf ( all the lagers ) not found any pleasant ones ( though the vagabond ipa by brewdog is great) I might have to the kit kat at Tesco, I had the Morrison’s one but it wasn’t good

Ah ok, how do you know how much to take? I’m totally in the dark when it comes to T4/T3 🤦‍♀️

I only take half a 25mcg tablet, i feel better, that may change as my body gets used to it but for now I’m good

100mcg of levothyroxine cant be expected to makeyou feel better, not really. What was your free t4 and free t3 on this amount? Ideally you woukd take enough levothyroxine so that your free t4 was at the top of,or just over range and. your free t3 was also in top third of the range.

Have you any figures to go on? If your t4 isnt high then there isnt much hope of it converting into t3.

Beforeyou rush into sourcing, importing and paying for t3, forever, i would have a go at getting your ft4 to the top end of the range. Probably using more than 100 of t4 though.
