I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in January. I'm now on Levothyroxine. I've been reading a lot about food intolerances and their relation to Hashimoto's. I don't have any digestion issues but I can no longer drink alcohol. It's really strange as I can drink a glass of wine but 4 hours later, my heart will be raising, I'll feel hot and cold, then have a 3-day hangover with headaches. I've now stopped drinking. I usually drink 3 cups of coffee a day but have noticed (now I've been paying attention) that after my first cup I have a mild ache in the thyroid area which gets worse with each cup I drink, only mild, but still annoying so given up coffee too.I hear a lot of people say that they get reactions from certain foods when they have Hashi's but it usually seems to be digestive problems. Does anybody else get the sensation of their thyroid being sore if they eat or drink certain things?

I'm now giving the Paleo diet a go (not the AIP at the moment as too restrictive), I started Monday. Is anybody doing Paleo and found it helps with symptoms? My TSH, FT3 and FT4 are all optimal now and I've corrected my nutrient deficiencies since being diagnosed (B12 and Vitamin D) and take selenium, D3 and K2, magnesium glycinate, B complex daily, zinc, probiotics and ashwagandha.

My remaining symptoms are fatigue, brain fog (not as bad as it was) and depression, I just feel very sad at the moment, no longer optimistic about the future, hopefully, will get myself out of this and it is just temporary.

Hi

just to say I cannot drink any alcohol without feeling extremely ill as if I had been badly poisoned, even after a few sips of something the strength of beer. I used to love a real ale half pint or two or a good red wine.. havent had alcohol for several years now. I thought it must be my liver ( I did point it out to my gp but he didnt do anything ) but maybe it it hashimotos symptom.

It could be something to do with your blood sugar fluctuating wildly due to insulin resistance or liver detoxification being very poor. I always take milk thistle with any alcohol and it really helps. A more comprehensive blood test could shed some light (depression also accompanies inflammation).

I don't drink alcohol, or anything with caffiene, either.

I think these drugs just cause a big stress on the body. In our society people act as if they're nothing, but actually they powerful drugs.

When you're low on energy, and perhaps struggle to keep things regulated, as we are, you can actually feel the toll they take.

Alcohol is very normalised but you are right, it is doing nothing positive for our bodies. I am so determined to improve my health and of that means giving up alcohol and coffee (and now gluten, soy and dairy *wail*), then so be it

Hi Starlight1976 - I developed the same problem a few years ago where if I drank beer it would trigger an intense headache and a hangover for days. So I switched to red wine and seem to be ok. I also appear to have an issue with refined sugar and things like muffins and the like. I no longer eat bread. My other symptoms include joint pain, swollen right eyelid, carpal tunnel and tarsal tunnel whenever I eat the wrong things. I'm making an appointment with an immunologist to see what's going on.

Feeling sad and hopeless is a horrible place to be and I think there will be many on this forum who understand exactly where you are. There is a strong link between your gut health, your general health and your mental health and here's just one article with info on this and the thyroid btf-thyroid.org/information...

With Hashi's being an autoimmune disease, you can be reassured that your low mood is most likely due to your gut health and given you have managed to optimise your thyroid results and have optimised your vitamins, you are heading in the right direction for healing and feeling better mentally. Personally I think a paleo diet will help, indeed Dr Isabella Wentz is all for this in relation to Hashi's thyroidpharmacist.com/artic...

I am gluten, dairy and soya free and this has made a huge difference for me on headaches that seemed to last for weeks, and with reducing bloating.

Thank you so much for your post, it really lifted me. I had a few days where I was so low, imagining a very dark future for myself of constantly being tired and sad. I'm really going to give Paleo a good shot and to be honest, its a style of eating that I like so think I can stick with it. I'm really hoping that making these adjustments to my diet is going to be another piece in my jigsaw. Just got to stay hopeful. Good luck to you too x

Here's a very small study related to diet and Hashi's which is really interesting. It's only just been published. It uses the AIP diet, which is Autoimmune Protocol diet, which roughly speaking is a tighter version of paleo, eliminating known trigger foods such as nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes etc), eggs, dairy and a few others and then re-introducing them slowly to see how your body reacts to them. If you get one of the Medichecks tests, I think it's the ultra vit, it gives you the CRP marker for inflammation, and the study is suggesting that going from a SAD (standard american diet) to the AIP diet reduces inflammation by 29% with some general symptom improvement.

My husband follows the AIP diet which is why I am familiar with it! Stick with the paleo for now and keep in mind that you can try AIP in future if paleo isn't quite hitting all the marks you were hoping for
