NDT - small amount

A private doc has suggested a starting dose of 1/2 grain of NDT..along with some supplements. I appreciate we are all different but just wondering if anyone had a good experience on a low dose. My NHS GP won't look beyond TSH so doesnt think I need anything. My T4 low and T3 very low. This may all be stress related...I panicked when sleep got disrupted and have created anxiety / sleep issues. So wondering if I continue trying to work on that before taking NDT..... or if my thyroid needs some help for sleep/anxiety to improve?? Words of wisdom would be great. Thank you.

You start low and build up. Hasn't your doctor told you this?

I assume you aren't on Levo and are going straight onto NDT?

Normal protocol is to start with 1/2 grain, split into 2 doses, and stay on that for 7 days.

If no adverse effects then add another 1/2 grain, so you would be taking 1 grain split into 2 doses. Stay on that for 3 weeks.

Then add another 1/2 grain - split into 2 doses - 1 grain in morning, 1/2 grain for dose later in day. Stay on that for 3 weeks.

After that, if necessary add another 1/2 grain - split into 2 doses of 1 grain each. Stay on that for 3 weeks.

If you need further increases it should be 1/4 grain increments or you may miss your sweet spot.

Have you been asked to monitor temperature and pulse? Apparently that's important too. I don't take NDT, this is just what I've read.

Vitamins all need to be optimal first

Vitamin D at least around 80nmol and around 100nmol may be better

B12 and folate near top of range

Ferritin at least half way in range

Have you retested since started supplementing

in reply toSlowDragon

I was already supplementing when tested but not everything. I've just been to the canaries to get some sun as vit d was low. Mood def better & sleep was ok there on the whole. That was going to be my plan - take all reccomended supplements first ... then retest before starting NDT. I'm also trying to work on acceptance of the anxiety & sleep as me reacting has made it worse I think. How long until supplements can be retested? My physical energy is ok .... so that's what makes me question whether I've really a thyroid problem or an anxiety / sleep problem Thx jo x
