NDT ..... feeling totally wiped out

I was taking 2.5 NDT but started feeling jittery, had palpitations and hot flushes during the night.

Dropped to 2 grains and 3 weeks down the line I feel totally wiped out, banging headaches, tinnitus worse than it was and more aches and pains.

I mentioned a while ago, I’m wondering if NDT is not for me ?

Does anyone else feel NDT is not the wonder hormone they were hoping it would be ?

Maybe you need to add some levothyroxine...

Hi adin

Can you explain a little more please ?

Someone explain very well on the forum ;you'll probably feel hypo, because your T4 will be too low. To get around that, some people are combining T4 with NDT. There are some examples here: tiredthyroid.com/blog/2014/...

Her T4 is very high on NDT 2.5 grains please look at her past blood test results.

What about increasing to 2.25 grain, half way between the 2 and 2.5 doses?

have u tried other NDTs? do u think it works better than those?

No, this is the only one I’ve tried

It takes time to sort out the correct dose, I have read you blood test results and there was no FT3 done, however your T4 was much too high on NDT. Perhaps you should give it more time on two grains, how do you take them?

Hi Bunnyjean,

Ft3 wasn’t tested at last blood draw.

I’m going to order a test for me to do at home.

I take both grains early morning, before breakfast

in reply toAnniewoz1

Taking two together may be too much for your system. I take one grain at 6 am and another at 2 pm this way the NDT is more spread out.

Sounds like over medicated. Definitely decrease dose. NDT has both T4 and T3 - my experience is that one finds optimal health on much less NDT compared to T4 only. More esp

Especially if one is taking selenium, Vit D, etc. (post was broken accidentally) but again. Classic signs of overmedicated - it’s working! All too well. For me initial dose was 3 grains (not uncommon for Drs here to start out with that mega dose - they have no idea! USA). In less than 3 weeks I had similar symptoms as you describe. Gradually reduced to 1 grain and am as right as rain. Still have tinnitus - but at 62, can rarely remember not having it - medicated or not. I’m almost afraid to tell my Dr how little I take. Pay the same amount for 30 or 90 tablets. (Insurance structure)

It’s your call of course, but don’t be afraid to reduce dose gradually. I cut pills back by 1/4 until I was taking only 1/2 of one pill rather than 2 - which amounts to about 1 grain. Have been on NDT for 5 years. I cannot go back to T4 only.

Thanks for taking the time to reply dtate2016

It was getting to the stage where I didn’t know whether to stick with NDT or go back to levo .....

I’ll do as you suggest and cut back the dosage and see how I feel, before making any rash decisions
