Hi Folks

I am sure there are many of you taking Selenium.

Question is how much? I just purchased some and they are 200mcgs. That seems a lot, some articles reference 60mcgs per day. What are your experiences please.

Thanks

200mcg is the usual amount recommended when people have Hashi's.

I don't have Hashi's and take 100mcg now and an occasional break (although I did start off with 200mcg).

It is possible to test selenium level, which some people prefer to do before supplementing.

I too would be interested to know dosage. Endo and Opthalmologist ( for TED) both recommended I take this without either testing or recommending a dose. Like you I take 200mcg. but was confused there were 2 options available with one labelled absorbable inferring the other wasn't !!

My understanding is that the two forms are "organic" and "inorganic" - I'm not trained, these are my findings from my own research.

Organic forms are selenium L-selenomethionine and yeast bound selenium - these are the most absorbable forms.

Inorganic forms are selenite and selenate - these are the least absorbable forms. Selenite is often used in cheaper supplements and can produce toxic effects when taking too much.

Selenium L-selenomethionine is the form recommended and said to have the best absorption.

Thank you for clearing that up. I just went for the cheapest but noting the word "toxic" will buy the absorbable one in future

There is some confusion here ,not helped by the latest edition of Harmony, the Thyroid UK journal that on page 14 gives the NHS recommendation to treat deficiency as being 60mcg per day for women and 75mcg for men and states “ exceeding this can be toxic “ .On page 9 Dr.Alyssa Burns-Hill PhD recommends 200mcg as well as iodine and fish oil! Is she a medical doctor?

No, she's a PhD.

Indeed, which makes her recommendations somewhat questionable, especially as an adviser to Thyroid UK ,and bracketing both Dr. and Phd around her name is presumably to make the distinction that she is not a Dr .of medicine but some may be confused.
