Selenium

Ive been reading a lot recently about selenium and using it for thyroid function. Has anyone had any issues while taking it? I purchased some and took one for the first time tonight but have since come out in hives. Has anyone had this or similar problems?

What dose are you taking?

Is it selenium l-selenomethionine or is it selenite or selenate?

It could well be one of the excipients.

Its 200mcg. Sodium selenite anhydrous.

Selenium l-selenomethionine is the recommended form which I suggested when I replied to you in this post:

This article discusses the different forms of selenium:

I had the same experience with Selenium that I did not do well with it. . It's very possible that we get enough Selenium from the foods we eat . When I supplemented with Selenium I was itching had skin breakouts nervousness and hair falling out . I heard some had their sugar levels go up too.

Suggest you have a read of the Office of Dietary Supplements site - which says:

Can selenium be harmful?

Yes, if you get too much. Brazil nuts, for example, contain very high amounts of selenium (68–91 mcg per nut) and can cause you to go over the upper limit if you eat too many. Getting too much selenium over time can cause the following:

Garlic breath

Nausea

Diarrhea

Skin rashes

Irritability

Metallic taste in the mouth

Brittle hair or nails

Loss of hair or nails

Discolored teeth

Nervous system problems

ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/S...

However, it could be the other ingredients.

I've read that you won't feel good on selenium if you're iodine deficient because they work together. But I don't think is a good idea to supplement iodine although fish is good if you can have it. Also, I found out my selenium was great when I tested without supplementing. Maybe you don't need it.

I was thinking the same myself, that im probably ok as its in dairy etc which i do eat a lot of. I think im going to request a test with my next lot of bloods before taking anymore supplements. Thanks for your reply x

I’ve been taking nutrisorb liquid selenium 2 drops per day. (I do also take iodine daily )

No side effects

Did you have your levels checked before you started taking suplplements? Ive heard a lot of mixed reviews about iodine.

I only had my vit D and B12 and folate measured.

Yes there are a lot of people who would not touch iodine because of concerns about compounding hypothyroidism. For me it's been hugely beneficial but only with selenium i.e. Not iodine alone.

Im glad you have found something that works for you. I guess its a long journey for everyone. Ive not had vit d tested. managed to get tsh, t3,t4 , tpo, b12 folate and ferritin but only because the nurse was doing my blood so i took advantage of that. The month previous my gp refused and only tested my tsh and t4 x

Good luck in your health journey
