Selenium dose

hi all - had some helpful suggestions for which brand to buy - thank you. Now what dose?

Medichecks selenium levels test is £100+ so I'm definitely avoiding that one if at all possible...

Any idea what's a sensible level to dose? Cytoplan tables are 100µg.

thanks again in advance

My GP iin Crete suggested Selenium to me when I was diagnosed back in 2005. It was 200mcg daily for 6 months then a two month break !

Often suggested here when Hashi's is present is 200mcg.

I don't have Hashi's and I take 100mcg.

Thanks both x

Look at the STTM website there is a good article on selenium and dosage and the link to iodine.

I note two seemingly contradictory statements on the STTM page:

The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements states that adults should not consume more than 400 mcg of selenium per day.

AND

To reduce the risk of toxicity it is recommended to start with 200mcg working toward the upper tolerable limits of 400-600mcg of organic selenium.

And, just why would you positively work towards the maximum tolerable dose? Isn't that all too similar to doctors regarding reference intervals (ranges) as absolute limits. Surely you want the optimum for you as an individual? Which is very likely to be less than any maximum.

First and foremost what is provided on any website is "information", individuals must do their own research and decide what course/route they are going to take.

In the UK dietary intake is based on RDA recommendations from government health department, so too is the NIH (US government agency), which I do not find helpful for my own hypothyroid condition. As with Vit C and Magnesium intake one finds the loading dose and then drops back i.e. finds ones' optimal dose.

My (hypothyroid) adult daughter suffers knock out migraines: she took a split, daily dose of 600 ug selenium methionine (and other supporting nutrients) and had no migraines for 10 weeks, when reduced to 200 ug back came the migraines regularly each week, back up to 400 ug, no migraines now for three weeks.

Important is the understanding that minerals and vitamins should not be taken in isolation as is clear in relation to selenium and its relationship with iodine as imbalances can be created, (I took X and it made me feel worse or I didn't do anything for me). The article also points out the differences in inorganic and organic selenium and the need for companion nutrients. It also clearly states get your selenium levels tested first. "..though you can see all the fabulous benefits from selenium, some patients found out the hard way that they should have tested their selenium levels first before supplementing, as their levels may already be too high due to methyl pathway blockages or mutations like MTHFR".

In summary: anyone reading ANY article should at least read hyperlinks, read research papers (abstracts and conclusions at least) , consider the content in relation to their own health situation, never read any article in isolation! 25 years managing my hypothyroid condition, I do not consider anything I read isolation.
