Hi all, have been taking NDT for the last 7 weeks and had some bloods done yesterday and wouldn’t mind seeking some help from you all interpreting the results!

Please note this test was a fasting blood test

TSH 0.08 (Range 0.27-4.2)

Free T3 6.43 (Range 3.1 - 6.8)

Free Thyroxine 17.100 (Range 12 - 22)

Thank you xx

Looking good - how do you feel ? - and how much NDT are you taking ?

Thank you for replying. To be honest I don’t really feel much different, however my sleep has improved vastly! I used to have problems getting off but not anymore. I take 1 grain every morning as soon as I wake up. I have heard theories about waiting 1 hour before drinking coffee or tea when on NDT but not sure if that’s true!

That is absolutely true. For maximum absorption, you need to leave 1 hour before eating or drinking anything other than water, and at least two hours before taking any other supplements or medication. Sometimes four hours. And that is true for all thyroid hormones. :)

Thank you for your reply! There have been a few times when I’ve drunk coffee or tea earlier than 1 hour as it depends what I’m doing on that particular day, and I travel for a living and am on different time zones sometimes so I have to accept that but my results show a vast improvement so clearly I don’t have absorption issues! My TSH was 2.44 on January 10th and is now 0.08 with the NDT!

Caffeine interferes with the uptake of thyroid hormones as does food, so stomach has to be empty before and after taking the hormones and wait at least one hour before eating.

Some people prefer an early a.m. dose, whilst other prefer a bedtime dose. Stomach has to be empty before and after. Also thyroid hormones should be taken with one full glass of water and wait an hour before eating. Not just swallowed as if it were an aspirin.

Oh I wasn’t aware of having a full glass of water! I haven’t been doing that, thank you for letting me know. I’m tempted to do a bedtime dose....but worried it might interfere with sleep as T3 is stimulating.

? "T3 is stimulating" - not at all. I can vouch for that and I think it is too busy getting the T3 into the millions of T3 receptor cells so that you feel better. Once in the cells it sends out 'waves' which last between one to three days for that one dose.

If we take too much of either T4 or T3 we will feel 'hyper' but next time reduce dose.

Oh that’s interesting. Do you take it at night then? Because I think that might suit my lifestyle better
