Hi all, I was wondering if anyone can relate to my story, I was diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid back in January yet my thyroid results were all within range though showing low tsh ft3 and ft4, so I was referred to an endocrinologist who retested everything and all came back middle of range except my LH and FSH hormones which were quite high yet with no explanation either, however I have a tender ovary upon palpatation, so now waiting for gyncology appointment. Now I have been noticing a pattern with my voice troubles, my voice seems to go round about my period time, so I don't think it is down to my enlarged thyroid more my hormones. Does anyone else seem to have a pattern with voice hoarseness and hormones or could it just be enlarged thyroid?? I assumed if it was thyroid then my voice would be hoarse all of the time ?? Thank you for any help x
Hormones and voice: Hi all, I was wondering if... - Thyroid UK
Hormones and voice
Before I was diagnosed and treated, I used to lose my voice all the time.
I imagine that when you say 'hormones', you are referring to sex hormones. The thyroid also produces hormones - T4 and T3 - and when they are low, you can get all sorts of symptoms in that area. So, the answer to your question is: yes, it's all to do with thyroid hormones.
I’m currently experiencing a hypo moment (just about to increase dosage) and have found that for a couple of weeks now my voice has been hoarse and I’ve been losing it periodically. The only pattern I’ve noticed is that my voice is more likely to be croaky when my thyroid hurts.
I’ve read on here that thyroid hormones fluctuate with your cycle. Not sure if the specifics but wonder if that could have to do with it!
I have had voice problems for over a year. I have also had 'vocal' help from the ENT dept which hasn't worked so far. I have had my vocal cords examined and they're fine but sometimes don't close when they should. I am going to have another course and then see the Consultant in about six months.
I cannot say whether it's due to hypo or not but I know when I sang I felt something happen in my throat. It's anybody's guess.
Thank you all for your reply, my thyroid hormones always seem fine I think it's my sex hormones that affects my voice, I'm with ent in a few weeks so I'm hoping they may have answers this time, the appointment is about getting my thyroid removed so I wonder if once it's out the pathology report may give me better answers x
Maybe it's both? But a rough throat and difficulty speaking is definitely a hypothyroid symptom. Like shaws I have difficulty singing. For several years before being diagnosed (though still "Subclinical") with Hashimotos (autoimmune thyroid condition) I began to find it harder and harder, and especially to reach the higher notes. I'm not a professional singer, just like making a "Joyful noise". Sometimes I open my mouth and not even a croak will come out, though speaking isn't affected except I've become very gruff and sound "Old"
I thought the voice problem was due to acid reflux (also a hypothyroid symptom, though I had no idea of that until discovering this forum), but it was probably the thyroid itself.
Almost any symptom has several possible causes, so best investigate both.
Could you post your actual blood test results with reference ranges? Just because they are "In range" means nothing, because the ranges are too wide. For most of us hypos a TSH over 1 is often too high, but T3 and T4 need to be nearer the top of the range to control symptoms.
I should mention I been tested twice for hashimotos and cameback negative both times.x
Not denying you have sex hormone abnormalities but you could still have thyroid problems too. The thyroid affects every cell and organ in the body, including the reproductive system. "My voice seems to go round about my period time" sounds like a thyroid effect too, if I remember.
Have looked at your results below. I don't know enough to be certain but part of the problem could still be thyroid. TSH is extremely variable anyway, but T3 and T4 are almost certainly not high enough.
You are right that your FSH and LH are much too high though!
Hi thank you for your reply, I feel the same about my voice making me sound old, it's become very gruff, yet sometimes can sound completely normal, though I have noticed it does get particularly worse around my menstruation time, so I do feel it's a hormonal problem instead of just enlarged thyroid. I've had quite a few tests this year but only ever my sex hormones that come back high, oh and my eosinophil count, which I'm told not too worry about 🤔. I have posted my blood results, I appreciate any feedback I can get on these as it has all muddled my brain. I do have a very tender ovary when pressed upon, so I wonder if all my enlarged thyroid, voice troubles fatigue etc is all directly linked to my ovary issue as they seem to be my high hormones?..

Hi Ruth
I know this post is 2 years old so you may not receive this! I was searching for info about my LH and FSH coming back high and came across your post. I also have a very hoarse voice around 7 days up to my period, and have had these abrnomal female hormone results similar to yours. I also have high SBGH. I have hashimotos but I am on NDT and my bloods are okay i.e. free t4 and free t3 high etc
did you ever find out what was wrong? I would be interested to know as it is so similar to my symptoms
thank you
