Major surgery

I have to have major bowel surgery and I am wondering if it will impact on my thyroid. I had RAI many years ago and am totally dependent on thyroxine. After my last post on here I raised the dosage to 150mg daily as advised and am due another blood test to check my levels. However other issues (suspected cancer) have focussed my attention elsewhere. I know I’m in for a grim few months and don’t want to exasperate it by my thyroid also being out of kilter. Anyone know if my thyroid is likely to be impacted?

Any surgical intervention is going to impact your conversion. But that is normal and will happen whether you have a thyroid or not. Whether you're hypo or euthyroid. Your T3 will more than likely decrease and your rT3 increase. And that will happen for a reason - to force you to rest while your body heals. So, don't worry about it. Take all the time you need to recuperate, and don't get a thyroid test! Wait until you're better. Things should go back to normal, in time. :)

Thank you! Im going to find it difficult to rest but I shall listen to my body and do as I’m told.

That's best, yes. Just don't over-do things. :)

I cannot answer your question but can assure you regarding your bowel surgery. My mother had colon cancer in her sixties and then again a few years later. Mum lived to be 99 years old and very lively too. I hope your recovery is swift.

I had cancer surgery two years ago and then a year ago had surgery on scbadly broken wrist and yes I took a bit of a knock but as you say did as I was told but also remembered to try and stick to my regime whenever possible ( thinks like taking mother medications at appropriate times and generally be kind to yourself). Get plenty of rest and relaxation

I hope the surgery goes well and you are done on the road to recovery.

Have you thought of making some good bone broth soups? Freeze small portions down so you can get out and heat, will help restore your gut health

Emotional support from Macmillan is also absolutely fantastic not only for you but anybody supporting you

All the very best xx
