Epstein Barr Virus and thyroid pain

My blood tests revealed that my thyroid has been attacked by the Epstein Barr Virus. This has caused nodules on my thyroid and also of acute thyroid pain.

My endocrinologist has put me on a 3 month course of antiviral medication.

I am very fatigued, feel generally unwell, anxiety and still have pain in my thyroid. It’s a constant battle through each day.

All started 3 months ago and don’t feel like I’m getting better. Anyone got advice or experienced this?

I am certain the Epstein Barr virus caused my Hashi's. there is apparently a connection. I would be interested to know which blood test you had that showed the link between thyroid problems, nodule formation and the Epstein Barr virus?

Hi Baibabs

I had to pay private for blood tests. My endocrinologist sent me to London for the tests to The Doctors Laboratory.

They did the following blood tests as listed on the results sheet:

EBNA IgG antibody

VCA IgG

EBV VCA ab (IgM)

Thanks for this information. I'm sure these are the tests I had to see if the EBV was still active. They didn't indicate if my thyroid was affected but that the virus was no longer active in my body.

Hi Lavender03

I’m curious to know how your endo is sure that the EBV attacked your thyroid. Did you have any tests other than the standard EBV blood tests you’ve mentioned above?

Would you be willing to post the results of any tests, including those EBV blood test? The different results to the tests you’ve mentioned determine if you have no EBV infection, a current EBV infection or a recent/past EBV infection, depending on the mix of positive and negative results. Would be good to understand what has prompted the endo give you the antiviral medication.

What medication is it?

Sorry for all the questions, just looking for some useful information for myself!

Yes I'm curious also. It is so important to hear and share the experiences of others.

Hi, to answer your questions:

I don’t know how the Endo concluded it was the virus that attacked thyroid and caused nodules, I think he was going by the fact they both occurred together, along with pain.

He gave me the antiviral, Aciclover, 3 months supply to stem the progress of the virus further in the body. He gave a CT scan to check other organs.

I can’t seem to upload a photo of blood tests. But thyroid results were ok apart from thyroglobulin antibodies which came back at 620 normal range should 0-115.

It’s been very tough for me over the last 3 months and still is.

Thanks Lavender03. I sympathise with you having had EBV and now hypothyroid/CFS/ME for a couple of years, your symptoms sound very much like mine, I hope you get some relief soon

Lauricidin (£26.46 for an 8 ounce tub from Amazon) and reishi mushroom powder are alternative antivirals you may wish to consider.

Thanks, I’ll give those a try

Hi

I tested positive for Epstein Barr virus under a private Endocrinologist.

At that time I was absolutely worn out, cold all the time and suffered extreme stiffness in my neck and joints and didn’t really know much about thyroid issues and symptoms.

The Endocrinologist put my symptoms down to Epstein Barr Virus and gave me a long course of anti virus tablets.

I took them for months, with no effect at all.

When I mentioned to my Endocrinologist that despite taking the anti virus tablets, it had made no difference to me, he didn’t know what to say to me, this is when I joined this forum for answers.

He did then diagnose me with Hashimoto’s as I had antibodies present and, I paid privately for a scan, which confirmed this.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, he left me to get worse stating no thyroid medication would help so I parted company, it was clear to me it was all thyroid related.

I eventually got treated by my GP on Levothyroxine as my TSH has shot up to 12.2 and my anti bodies results had increased.

One thing I did do, was go gluten free to help with inflammation and my leaky gut.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

I have the Epstein-Barr virus also in my body although I haven’t had any flare ups for years. I remember thoug, when I first got it I could hardly drag myself out of bed. It’s called chronic fatigue syndrome. So, it may be the virus rather than the drugs that has you so fatigued. There are many books out on the subject. Please buy one and read through it while you are stuck at home. There is a lot of valuable information in these books because other people have been where you are. I’ll keep you in my prayers

Thank you, any help and advice, and prayers are gratefully received

I hope you are doing better these days. As it gets closer to the holidays, I find myself watching the Hallmark movies. They are rather mindless but always end happily, so, it lessons the depression that can come with chronic illness. I’m still praying for you

It’s been a very tough time for me and the family. Appreciate you still thinking of me.

I have experienced this after contacting the EB virus in Brazil while volunteering at an orphanage. All three of us that worked with the dentist got the virus. One of my friends had to quit her job because of the terrible fatigue, plus we all gained weight and could barley go about our day without pain. Just wanted to sleep. So I don’t know if that’s what took my thyroid glad down, but it’s very possible. I’ll pray for you :)it takes a good 18 months to get some energy back
