Hi
I had a partial thyroidectomy in March of 2016 and a hysterectomy in August of 2016. Since my thyroid surgery I have had oral thrush (mouth) on numerous occasions.. Has anyone else had this problem?
No, I haven't.
Do you have the presribed drops - Nystatin oral suspension - to treat the this?
Yes.. The doctor put me on another round of Nystatin.. This is day 2 of 10.. She told me that some women experience this after thyroid surgery and menopause.. I am just tired of dealing with this.. Anytime I take antibiotics I would get a yeast infection and now if I take antibiotics I get thrush.. The thrush started after my thyroidectomy..
Have you had your vitamin levels tested? Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and Vitamin B12? If these are low it may make you more prone to infection, especially vitamin D. I take up to 1000mg of vitamin C daily and have been prescribed vitamin D3. I don't think it's normal to get recurrant bouts of thrush in menopause or after thyroidectomy, I don't have it.
Once you've got results of vitamins post them here as docs will often say they are ok if within NHS range but bumping along the bottom of the range will not help your health, especially when living with half a thyroid.
It might be worth asking a dentist for help. I have problems with recurring, often very severe mouth ulcers that my doctor basically ignored. My dentist, on the other hand, referred me to hospital.
Ok.. Thank you
I used to get canker sores, don’t know if this is what you have, but I found that using toothpaste without the additive SLS, sodium laurel sulfate, stopped me from getting them. Also cutting out sugar.
Ok... I am going to switch my toothpaste and I have cut bread and sugar out my diet.. Thank you for the advice..
Hi Mickey good idea to cut out sugar and wheat. I had Candida and recurrent thrush.
I am now on Sugar free Gluten Free Candida diet. You may experience 'die off' as the Candida dies. I sought advice from Nutritionist. My GP also gave me pessaries to rebalance my PH.
Hope your thrush infections disappear for good.
There is another thing you can do that might help and is worth trying. You could ruthlessly remove sugar from your diet. Candida (the yeast that causes oral thrush) thrives on sugar in the diet.
Do you take pro biotics at the same time or after your antibiotics?
Yeast can be a reason for thrush. So may take a while for the bread etc that you gave up to have an affect. I have a herbal fluoride free toothpaste and brush my tongue with a toothbrush as I’ve suffered from carpet mouth for decades. This helps stimulate the debris from sleeping. Looking forward to your results on Monday. I assume you’re not in the U.K.?
Thank you.. No I’m in the United States..
I think you will find it a B vitamin deficiency. Problem is there are a lot of B Vits and I cannot remember which one! My daughter had thrush as a baby and her pediatrician and a book I was reading both suggested I "painted" her tongue with this B Vit. It worked like magic - like in less than a minute. You might want to cover all bases and get a B-complex vitamin supplement, I am pretty sure that will fix it. You could also ask your doc to measure all of the B vitamins in your blood, that will nail down which one you are deficient in. While you are waiting for all this you might want to start eating a lot of yoghurt, that has this critical B vit in it and might be enough to fix the problem. But do find out your B levels so that you know how to keep this problem at bay.
What about good old honey, always a relief when suffering anything nasty in the mouth.
I take it on a dessert spoon natural sugars are in it but it's also antibacterial and may restore the balance that you need.
Ok.. Thank you..
