Mum has Hashimoto’s, help with my results please?

Hello, I would appreciate some help with the results I’ve had back. My mum has hashimoto’s and understand it’s hereditary whilst also experiencing symptoms anyway eg no motivation, fatigue, weight gain. I have received the following:

Iron 96 ref 49-151

Ferritin 29.22 ref 13-150

Folic Acid 2.3 ref 4.6-18.7

Vit D 24.45 ref 21-29

TSH 3.46 ref 0.27-4.2

Free T3 4.53 ref 3.95-6.80

Free T4 14.7 ref 12.0-22.0

B12 274.7 ref 191-663

Anti Tg ab 512 positive ref <115

Anti Tpo ab 279.5 positive ref <34

I would appreciate any help/guidance on interpreting these from someone who is experienced as From what I’ve read GP is going to be of no help?

I'm not sure what you mean " . . . GP is going to be of no help ". Have you tried asking?

Your Antibodies are raised which Indicates Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

Have you not discussed these results with your GP yet?

As you can see, your Folate is below range and your B12 low in range.

I would write a full list of symptoms and questions, make an appointment with the most agreeable, approachable GP in the practice and ask for further investigations (eg test for Pernicious Anemia ).

With Hashimoto's, regular Thyroid function blood tests can fluctuate so ask GP to refer you to an Endocrinologist or do his/her own tests. Have you ever asked GP for an Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid?

Look up symptoms of B12 and Folate deficiencies.

Have you ever had any tests to check your Adrenals? If not you could consider asking about this before GP starts you on Levothyroxine. In case you need them tested first. I waited until I saw the Endocrinologist, he arranged Short Synacthen Test to check my adrenals before I started my Levothyroxine.

You should be started on no more than the 50mcg dose and have follow up retesting.

Are you in the UK? The range in vitamin D looks odd

Usually under 50 is insufficient

Under 25 deficient

Your Folate is extremely low and B12 low. See GP for full testing for Pernicious Anaemia before starting on folic acid supplements, possibly also B12 injections

Improving vitamins is first step.

GP may recognise that you have autoimmune thyroid disease or they may look at TSH and FT4 as being in range and want to watch and wait

Getting vitamins optimal will likely increase a TSH so that you can get thyroid treatment

Thank you SlowDragon and Mary-intussuception for your replies. I have had my tests done in Cyprus. I haven’t been to my GP due to the experiences my mum has had and those of many others however now I have some results I will present these to obtain an opinion whilst improving my vitamins. Thank you again.

Hi again Jh, that explains different VitD range. According to your results your Vitamin D is in range, just below midway.

I do understand your reluctance to go to your GP when you or a family member have had bad experience, but I kept away after each time I was offended. Had to wait till I felt "well" enough to face going there again. Tried different GPs, got various insults. Had advice to ask GP for the Thyroid Ultrasound scan, then still delayed going back.

That's why I say rest for a while, prepare yourself with lists of symptoms and questions and keep going back until you get diagnosis and treatment. Keep fighting - politely but firmly.

Would you be happy for someone to go with you? Would your Mum go with you or partner or friend? At least you have actually proof now of Antibodies blood tests results. GP may not accept private results so it's up to him /her to do their own or send you to an Endocrinologist who should do them all.

Hope you get to see a good Endocrinologist and get all appropriate tests.
