Which is best, zinc ororate or Zinc-bisglycinate (Zinc Chelate).

Hi all,

I am hypothyroid and have been on a combination of T4 and T3 since November after being prescribed T3 by an Italian endo, I feel so much better. I have managed to almost finish my PhD thesis, only two months to go until hand-in!

I am also taking a bunch of supplements, including Zinc. I have a zinc deficiency which was discovered through the blood tests the Italian doctor did. The strange thing is that after taking 10 mg Zinc for months, testing it again I discovered it got worse instead of getting better!

The doctor, whom I went to see recently told me to take 30 mg for a few weeks, but the Zinc ororate tablets are really expensive and I would have to take 3 a day so would run out very quickly.

Has anyone got a zinc deficiency and some advice on which tablets to take? would a cheaper version like Zinc-bisglycinate be ok?

Thanks all for all your help so far by the way! I wouldn't have gotten to this stage, where I feel mostly ok, without you!

To find out the bioavailability of various zinc supplements see this link :

Note that it doesn't mention zinc orotate. :)

Zinc and copper have a "relationship" in the body. People with high copper tend to have low zinc. People with low copper tend to have high zinc.

In people who are hypothyroid having low zinc/high copper is by far the most common.

Perhaps lowering the copper in your diet might be worth a try.

thanks so much for the inks and for your reply human bean, I have tried to follow a special diet to lower the copper in my body, it was really tricky and involved lots of boiled veg which I got really fed up with and after 3 months and also taking zinc supplements my zinc was even slightly lower! At the moment I am trying to eat grain free to lower phytates and encourage the absorption of zinc and iron. The doctor said that it might be that the supplement dose might have been too low and completely absorbed by the body.

I remember reading that hypothyroidism can cause low zinc by itself (by the way this is usually connected to hair loss. I have lost a bit of hair in the past but it has never been too bad. I do have slow wound healing and extremely dry skin though)

From the second link it is suggested that there is no massive difference between types of zinc....

Have you checked out zinc orotate on Amazon? Quite a few different makes, dosage and prices.

thanks for your reply seaside susie! That's where I get it from, I buy the Swanson zinc ororate and the cheapest is £8 including delivery. If I take 3-4 tablets a day its only going to last 2 weeks. I saw the advert of the Zinc-bisglycinate and it seems so much cheaper! I wonder what other members take...

Just looked through the 2 pages on Amazon and there's not as many zinc orotate as I thought, they've got other types mixed in despite the search being for orotate.

Not sure if this is any help, but Health Monthly (they are fine, I've often used them) sell the swanson one and the more you buy the cheaper it gets - check the drop down list where it says "Quantity"

healthmonthly.co.uk/product...

plus there's another make there as well, the Advanced Research 200 tablet pack might work out at a price that's acceptable.

Zinc is something rarely seen discussed here.

thanks so much for the tip seaside susie! I just bought the 200 tablet pack from health monthly. It works out 6 pounds cheaper and it with all the other supplements it all stacks up!

Yes that's interesting, I did search for zinc threads and didn't find a lot on it by members. Mostly related to alopecia, but zinc deficiency affects all sorts of processes and is also connected to depression and psychosis. My mood and capacity to concentrate is a lot better these days (but then in the summer I always feel better)...

I use HealthMonthly too. Be aware that their products come from all over the place and some of their deliveries can be very slow (or maybe I'm just really impatient).

Glad that helped.

They are based in Jersey. My orders have usually arrived in less than a week, and as far as I know if they have them in stock in their warehouse they are despatched within a couple of days. I think it's when they run low on stock in the warehouse they may be despatched from elsewhere which Humanbean has experienced. Hopefully you will get them in a few days.

I thought they were based in Gibralter, although one or two things have come from Jersey. I live and learn. :)

I like the fact that they give discounts on buying multiple bottles. For things I take a lot of, or take all the time, it can save substantial amounts of money.

HB - every page on their website has at the bottom their full address which is in St Helier. However, their Customer Service phone number isn't a Jersey phone number, the area code is not the same. Maybe it's just their Head Office in Jersey and they distribute from Gibralter (it's not a Gilbralter phone number either!), I can't remember what the postmarks on their parcels are like. But they're a pretty good company to deal with even if it does take a couple of days longer.

I don't think I've ever looked at the bottom of the page. My Holy Basil comes from Gibralter, but my probiotics come from Jersey.

Yes, I agree they are a good company.
