Can anyone tell me how many times magnesium has been mentioned here?

Abstract

Trace elements, such as iodine and selenium, are closely related to autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid function. Low serum magnesium is associated with several chronic diseases; however, its associations with autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid function are unclear. We investigated the relationships between low serum magnesium, autoimmune thyroiditis, and thyroid function in 1,257 Chinese participants. Demographic data were collected via questionnaires, and levels of serum thyroid stimulating hormone, anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody, anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb), free thyroxine, serum magnesium, serum iodine, and urinary iodine concentration were measured. Participants were divided into serum magnesium level quartiles (≤0.55, 0.551-0.85, 0.851-1.15, and >1.15 mmol/L). The median serum magnesium level was 0.89 (0.73-1.06) mmol/L; levels ≤0.55 mmol/L were considered severely low (5.9% of participants). The risks of TGAb positivity and Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) diagnosed using ultrasonography in the lowest quartile group were higher than those in the adequate magnesium group (0.851-1.15 mmol/L) (p < 0.01, odds ratios [ORs] = 2.748-3.236). The risks of total and subclinical-only hypothyroidism in the lowest quartile group were higher than those in the adequate magnesium group (0.851-1.15 mmol/L) (p < 0.01, ORs = 4.482-4.971). Severely low serum magnesium levels are associated with an increased rate of TGAb positivity, HT, and hypothyroidism.

Too many but the NHS don't seem to test. Thanks for posting.

If a simple serum magnesium test was worth doing, it might by now have been common. However, ...

Red cell magnesium levels are good indicators of magnesium status, as is the magnesium retention test (24hr urine magnesium levels before and after intramuscular magnesium injections), although this is not as convenient for the patient.

The same page also says this:

The presence of selenium and vitamin E is also required for the magnesium is to be absorbed.

Had not realised the specific need for selenium.

Thanks for posting helvella. I am about to test my Mg levels with a finger prick test which is I think a new test from medichecks. My TPO antibodies have fallen almost to zero but TgAb whilst not high has risen slowly. I have been taking Mg capsules for the last 6 months, pity I couldn't do the test before starting. will be interested to see my Mg levels and other comments on here

In this weather we're using up Magnesium even more rapidly (electrolytes like potassium, sodium, magnesium all get lost through pee and sweat). I can't hold onto the mineral at all. I'm currently taking one at lunch, one mid-afternoon and one at bedtime and it's not causing loose stools; so I'm tolerating it (it's still only equal to 60% NRV). I think that's the thing to remember - check bowel tolerance and that muscle strength isn't adversely affected as many people probably don't need to take a large dose.

Hi

I had a serum magnesium test say 16 years ago. It was the best £60 I ever spent. I managed to get magnesium sulphate injections daily as my levels were very low and I had horrific muscle cramps and seizures. Took two weeks and they disappeared. Now I am on a maintenance dose, thanks to a fab specialist.

The blood test is still available privately.
