I'd rather read a real thyroid expert's book, like Dr Barry Durrant Peatfield

So are you saying the Medical Medium books are not worth a read? They get very good reviews!

I think quite a few people here find it very hard to believe in what he says - given that his web site starts:

#1 New York Times best-selling author of Medical Medium, Life-Changing Foods, Thyroid Healing, and Liver Rescue was born with the unique ability to converse with Spirit of Compassion who provides him with extraordinarily accurate health information that’s often far ahead of its time.

Since age four, when he shocked his family by announcing that his symptom-free grandmother had lung cancer (which medical testing soon confirmed), Anthony has been using his gift to β€œread” people’s conditions and tell them how to recover their health.

Of course, in any book, there could be some statements with which many agree. The sticking point is often the inability to believe that only one person on the planet has a spirit they can converse with. Whether that is because many suspect no-one can, or that it is more common, is another matter.

I'm saying that I would rather read a book by a real thyroid expert like Dr P than a book by someone who has no medical experience and claims he is guided by the spirit world.

I'm willing to believe that he - or anyone else, come to that - talks to spirits - there are more things in heaven and earth etc. etc. What I find difficult to credit is that the spirits would want to talk to him about this sort of thing. And, if they did, I would expect what they have to say to be a little more… ground-breaking. All he professes to get from them could easily be found with a little bit of googling. Surely there must be more to it than that? There must be some really extraordinary cures/treatments out there, just waiting to be found or invented. Or are the spirits also limited to what they can google? It just isn't quite extraordinary enough for me to be taken in. :)

Catseyes235 profile image
Catseyes235β€’ in reply toKatherineM_PBC

Where are they reviewed? In scientific journals, medical journals?

I don't believe in spirit world's etc but there are some who can diagnose conditions by sensitivity to smells (Parkinson's and diabetes e.g. change people's smells). Our hearing can be acute when young so we hear bats but lose that upper register as we go through teens. Would a four year old know what lung cancer was or would he just say something about his grandmother not being well. And had she actually been medically checked for such conditions or was she just generally declared fit for her age? Of such things myths are created and inflated and built in.

I read his healing foods book and actually got more results using his guide than I have gotten from doctors since 2007 in regards to diabetes.

I figured I had nothing to lose by using his food guide and took a chance. My A1C has been 12.9 and in three weeks of following his food guide of eating fruits and veggies, it went down to 7.5.

I could care less about an "expert" with no results, as many of the doctors are that I have seen. I want results! Not more meds that create more issues and side effects.

As most people attest on this board, the doctors(experts) are not always knowledgeable about what will actually improve or rid you of symptoms.

I say all that to impress upon readers to be open minded and do your own research as well. Read the book , try out the food guide. Then come back and give your review.

Have to agree with you MNJones! In the all the years I have had medical conditions that even specialists in their field cannot fix, I have sought out alternative medicines and changed my diet significantly. From going gluten free to cutting right back on carbs, no processed food and lots of fruit, salad and veg. Despite my conditions listing symptoms of fatigue, I feel fit and have lots of energy. If the Medicine Medium strikes a chord with even 1 person and his advice helps them in any way, then that's great, but there will always be doubters!

I see this is your first post on the Thyroid forum - welcome. Do you have a thyroid condition? If so you will find much support here.

When I said I would rather read a book by a thyroid expert such as Dr Peatfield, I mean a thyroid expert not some TSH/blood test driven endocrinologist who doesn't take notice of symptoms.

If you continue to read the forum, you will find many mentions of Dr P. He left our UK National Health Service (NHS) because he knew how to treat thyroid conditions but the restraints of the NHS wouldn't allow him to. He was greatly impressed by the work of Dr Broda Barnes, visited the Barnes Foundation in the US and came back determined to help the poorly treated thyroid patients here in the UK. Of course, the NHS wouldn't allow him to so that's why he started in private practice. He has helped countless people to improve their condition and is much revered by many members here. This is the sort of "expert" I am talking about.

As for mediums, I belonged to a couple of spiritualist churches for many years, no longer attend because they closed down. I have seen many ineffective mediums, some charlatons, and the odd good one. I think there are/have been some fame hungry people who purport to be mediums but have been found to be fakes.

I don't believe that the Medical Medium is getting his information from the spirit world. From what I can gather, he is repeating advice that can be found elsewhere, it's not unique to him.

Oh, and Dr P, in his book, mentions Glandular Fever/Epstein Barr virus and records that about 30% of his patients give a history of glandular fever some time before they became ill.

greygoose profile image
greygooseβ€’ in reply toMNJones76

MNJones, I think you're missing the point - well, the point that many of us put across, anyway. I, for one, am not questioning his treatments, but there's nothing revolutionary in them. As I said, he could have gained all his 'medical' knowledge from google. But, claiming that he gets them from talking to spirits just doesn't ring in the least bit true. Pretty sure it's just a gimmick to get talked about - as we are talking about him here. And I - and a lot of other people, I believe - find that distasteful. There's nothing super-natural or magical about him, and I don't think he should be pretending there is.

β€’ in reply toMNJones76

I believe there are many things in the Universe that cannot be explained by logic or science. I also believe in miracles and a higher power (my term is God.). I believe many of us have had incidents happen in our lives that cannot be explained. That said, I am suspicious of people who make money with their 'gift', if indeed they have a gift. I also believe that with good intuitive and psychology skills self-described medical mediums or intuitives can be right on the money much of the time. This does not indicate a bonafide skill that I would want to base medical treatment on. There is a saying: "Even an eagle only hits 50% of his strikes." And even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Hi Katherine,

I have the first book, Medical Medium, I believe in and have experienced Spirit communication so I have no problem accepting that the source of Anthony Williams work is 'inspired'. I think he is a legitimate working Medium. I think that the advice in the book is probably just as good as any other book aimed at Thyroid patients, its a case of trying it and seeing if it helps, like any other approach. He does also dispel some myths, courtesy of his Spirit link. He certainly believes that the information he is being given comes from the highest source and I am inclined to believe it too.

Did I follow his advice, no but then I am not following any specific dietary advice, so its not personal :-)

Best of luck with your quest to be well.

"I believe in and have experienced Spirit communication so I have no problem accepting that the source of Anthony Williams work is 'inspired'."

I too have no problem believing that "Spirit communication" is real. Assuming this man really is "Inspired" and communicating with a spirit or spirits, we have to ask certain questions:

"What spirit is doing the communicating?"

"Is that spirit truly able to heal?"

"If so, *why* does it (or he, or whatever) heal? Does it really have our best interests at heart, or is there a hidden agenda?"

The Bible warns about hobnobbing with "Spirits" that are not of God, and with very good reason!

Here's a video of a frogfish. It has a "Lure" on its head that it waves around. A smaller fish is attracted, thinking the lure a tasty worm or something. And (just over 2 minutes in) the small fish itself becomes food: youtube.com/watch?v=Tb0UO9O...

I have finished medical medium book together with dr. Wentz, they are both in a way talking about the same thing, I believe in what he is saying! I am also a herbalist, suffering from Hashimoto but trying tricks and recommendations by both Anthony and Izabella (my studies, her book and Anthony one) they all goes around detoxing your liver from toxins and even the hormone what we are taking and not working and just getting jammed in our liver and what asserts on that, that we are not losing weight neither with your hormone it’s all tests on a paper. All the studies recommend cutting on gluten, dairy and eggs (be hormone free) and detox with some herbs and life style you will feel much better energy wise and clear mind.

What was she eating before is the question ? Anyway would feel better with eating those things and is just a good way for introducing fruit and fibre but with few fancy things like spirulina and seaweed derivatives. You can get the same effects with more common ingredients. There was a time when blueberries and cranberries were ' superfoods' and quinoa was truly exotic. . Not now . .even our cheap frozen food outlet sells quinoa !

If it makes you feel better it's great but look for cheaper alternatives.

I agree especially for a newbie. Not just cost but some people have sensitivity until their body adjust because their micro biome never had it in them. Ideally of course you want non-GMO and organic . My local Walmart has truly expanded their offerings which is nice - not everyone has alot of money.

people have to stop and think-- how did we get here anyway I'm talking about humanity ...

it's a little bit of common sense too w / your healing. if you know your ancestry and what they ate ,that's probably step one . And for us thyroid patients you've got to stay away from gluten & dairy probably more than anything else .

Catseyes235 profile image
Catseyes235β€’ in reply toBoohbette17

Without dairy, wheat, rice etc our societies would not have developed as they have. Their production enabled more people to be fed and towns and villages expanded. Our ancestors rarely lived past 30-40 years, many children died young and mothers in childbirth. Any infection could kill you. I'll stick to living in the present age thank you and eating as much organic, and mainly veg as I can afford. At least in the Uk our meat is produced to high welfare standards and without hormones as growth promoters. Conventional farmers in Uk still use antibiotics too readily in feed to 'prevent' disease.

Thats all good & fine but MY POINT WAS ... we didnt have crisps & the like ( processed junk) 100+ years ago. And if we did fry a potato , it was probably fried in animal fat of which was pasture grassfed & ended ( not just part of its life cycle ) Antibiotics aren't the worst either as you clearly stated. Any infection could kill we NOW know the gut microbiome has to be repopulated IF you must resort to it for yourself. Im on the fence tegarding use in livestock.

Catseyes235 profile image
Catseyes235β€’ in reply toBoohbette17

True but we had other nasties . . Old gardeners used to use cyanide and nicotine and goodness knows what to control pests. Over use of anti-biotics is leading to anti-biotic resistance so we could go back to dying from some simple infection with nothing to treat us. It seems that down through history we discover something and just don't know when to stop or how to use sparingly or wisely. Junk food is bad but I love cooking and never been attracted to it. I did have a McDonalds in 1986! I'm more inclined to link thyroid probs with an increase in background radiation but could be wrong.

I am glad you posted this, Katherine - I just started the book and find it fascinating. For those who haven't read the book..., he points to a possible CAUSE of thyroid issues, and the more I read, the more sense it makes since thyroid issues are becoming so prevalant and a majority of people have the Epstein-Barr virus.

I think we should all be open to new theories as in this more up-to-date book vs. just the avoid gluten, have your B12 checked - WHY are we not digesting our nutrients and why is our liver not working up to par etc.

It may be another dead end and i'm not giving up my eggs, but let's be more open-minded and maybe we can find more things that will help those of us who struggle with thyroid issues.

Chickenlady2009 profile image

I read the book. I'm pretty open minded about his spirit friend taking to him, although I have never experienced anything super natural myself. I actually couldn't read the book cover to cover because I just thought it was rambling on about common sense stuff so I skip read it. My take on it was; eat mostly vegetables and fruit- no proceeded foods because of additives. Start the day with celery juice. Cut out eggs and dairy etc. Epstein Barr virus is the cause of every disease on the modern world. You can put the virus in remission by eating healthy foods described in his book and supplementing with herbs and vitamins from Amazon. (I get posts on my Facebook from Medical Medium with links to Amazon sites). Unfortunately I'm a skeptic and felt he was probably getting commission from the companies whose supplements he recommends. (Although he probably is not.)

As I have a very limited diet, I would find it difficult to give up eggs, so I gave up on his advice. I heard something twenty years ago about glandular fever giving you autoimmune diseases- so his is not really a breakthrough theory.

the thing that separates the medical medium from others, in my mind, is that he posts his information for free on the internet. The fraudsters would make you buy their book. I followed his protocol, and when i was working out of town and forgot my meds (I'm on straight T-3) i was able to work for two weeks without them before my temps dropped to 95. I had no loss of energy, however, and i was doing demanding work. I like him.

I suspect that you don't become "#1 New York Times best-selling author" without managing to sell a lot of copies. He might be achieving it in a slightly different way to those others, but it is still resulting on those sales.

Catseyes235 profile image
Catseyes235β€’ in reply tohelvella

I can think if a lot of books that have been best sellers but doesn't mean I would trust them. Maybe more a reflection of people's desperate search for answers when feeling extremely weird, tired, emotional and vulnerable.

the issue for me is that when you feel bad (especially when hypo and your thoughts are negative and paranoid) and you are getting no answers you are very vulnerable to grasping at straws for answers. Fortunately with our NHS we are not going to be too exploited. I spent a lot of money on homeopathic remedies as there seemed to be something for all of my weird symptoms. It was a tarot card reader, at an alternative medicine expo -where I was looking for answers, who said I needed to use conventional medicine! (This was after the palm reader had said I would have four children, all boys, while my daughter who she thought was my sister stood quietly bemused).

Have to say I am very happy with the GPs in the practice I go to. (The bad one who thought .i was neurotic, told a woman who said she was sure she was expecting twins she wasn't and she was, told another woman she was just worrying about getting fat when she had a huge tumour on her stomach . . Left rather suddenly). It's only one who decided I should cut my meds due to TSH results without seeing me and seeing I've no symptoms of over medication. But he called and talked it through and was very open to what I said and was going to go and read up on it more. Those if us who gave come out the other side need to make our voices heard . To help those new to the disease.

Catseyes235 profile image
Catseyes235β€’ in reply togreygoose

But it took 2 arrogant doc's - one GP and one hospital doc to rob me of some twelve years, a degree, friendships, relationships and to some extent affect my relationship with my daughter as not always 'all there'! What should have been easily diagnosed and treated was an unnecessary nightmare. In fact I'm pretty sure that like my daughter I had hyper symptoms as a teenager so probably longer and two degrees scuppered). Then there was the TED after I finally got a good degree (another story of delay in referring to Moorefields and a wasted experimental op) at 44 so luck was what I made myself of the good times! My life and career could have been substantially different.

greygoose profile image
greygooseβ€’ in reply toCatseyes235

I've had symptoms since I was at least 8 years old. And no-one thought to test my thyroid until I was 55. Doctors I saw - and there were many, many of them - too many to count - because I moved around - either hinted at, or said outright, that I was just greedy, lazy and not very bright.

Even when I finally got diagnosed at 55, I could not find a doctor who knew how to treat me. They all preferred to sneer at me, laugh at me or look down their noses at me when I complained I still had symptoms. I was at the receiving end of some pretty awful treatment from some doctors, that I prefer not to dwell on, but suffice to say, I hate them all. Even those that could be classified as 'nice' were so incredibly stupid and ignorant that it sometimes took my breath away - how can they not know that?!? It's been an uphill battle all the way and, I too have lost a lot on the way. My relationship with my daughter only healed when she thought I was on my death bed at one point! Before that, she refused to believe I was ill. But, I think I can safely say that I have never seen a doctor that has not made me worse in some way or other. But helping me to get better? Forget it! Not going to happen. And I prefer to self-treat, anyway.

Catseyes235 profile image
Catseyes235β€’ in reply togreygoose

That is appalling. I suppose it must be difficult for doc's if you're moving around but I wasn't and still not picked up on.

What I gathered is that thyroid issues were seen as the province of middle aged women so thyroid not considered but can't tell you how many blood tests for anaemia I've had. I took myself to doc's as a teenager as couldn't put on weight and had very sweaty hands then when tired and put on weight (only perceptible to me as such a low base) .

I used to think the trigger was my father's death when I was 8 but as my aunt, brother and daughter had same there is a genetic component. Other factors I've read of is sunburn triggering the auto-immune reaction (I can't take sun and come out in weals), and glandular fever which I had the symptoms of but bloods weren't positive.

I hope you and your daughter have built up your relationship. Because my daughter has same condition she can be a bit more retrospectively understanding but now she is menopausal so that's another issue! It was tough enough with a teenager knowing which hormones to blame! Be well!

Also, I should mention - I can only take T3 to feel well, having got sick to death of having to argue and beg for it every time a prescription was due, I was champing at the bit to find an alternative answer, ie not have to rely on pharmaceutical drugs. Hello Katherine

I'm sorry I didn't see your thread earlier; otherwise I would have responded.

I haven't read the Thyroid healing book yet by Anthony but I bought the two previous ones.

I posted about him and his protocol only a few weeks ago and got many of the same negative responses you have. The most sensible advice I have read in the responses you've had and with which I agree wholeheartedly; is to try his dietary recommendations yourself and possibly try some of the supplements/adaptogens/teas he cites for certain illnesses and see what results you get.

You could look back at the thread I refer to; to see why I am impressed with his advice and know for certain, it can work. Also Amazon (UK and American) has screeds of reviews for his books which give insights into how his protocol has helped people who have been ill for decades.

One of the advantages for me was; the fact that there was a lot of good advice all in one location (whether it was on his website or his books) and I didn't have to trawl the internet; for which I didn't have the energy.

Please maintain your open mind; don't be too influenced by what others think!

For example: I have Dr Peatfield's book on Thyroid healing and have lost count of how many times I have read it (and forgotten every word) and I've consulted him twice for my hypo/adrenal problems and he hasn't helped me...….
