I want to get a bloody test to check all my vitamins ect. Can someone tell me the full list of what I should be checking?
Vitamin test for underactive thyroid - Thyroid UK
Vitamin test for underactive thyroid
We're not allowed to use that word, here! lol
Obviously that was a spelling error
Or a Freudian slip! lol
Not sure what that means to be honest 😜
Never mind, just joking. It just means saying something by error that you were thinking, but not intending to say. We all get fed up with blood tests.
So, what you need are :
vit D
vit B12
folate
ferritin
You can then start supplementing those, one at a time, according to the results. Then adding in the cofactors. One at a time.
Then you can start thinking about other things you might possibly need, but shouldn't be supplemented without testing first, like iodine, copper and calcium.
No point in testing for magnesium or vit C, just take them. You'll probably be low in zinc, as well, so you can just try taking that. Some people just take selenium without testing, others like to get it tested first.
But, the most important thing is to never start more than one supplement at a time. Always leave about two weeks in between starting each one.
Thank you so much for this information. You seem very knowledgably in this.
Hi there!
I was just about to ask the same question as Im going to ask my doctor for a full panel too.
I know you had mentioned it’d be a good idea to test the estrogen and progesterone levels too, is that right or did I dream that?
(I’m the one who had a thyroidectomy and I’m on levothyroxine as of now)
Thanks!
The most important are selenium, zinc, ferritin, iodine, vit D and omega 3 -6 ratio
Iodine? I thought there was a bit of controversy over whether iodine was a good idea for thyroid problems....Hashis anyway.
I think Heatherfavell means to test, not to take. At least, I hope she does!
Yes you're right and it depends which doctor or functional doctor you refer too. The opinions vary greatly. From all my study and taking an overall approach I would test via an iodine loading test to make sure that you aren't deficient which may account for getting Hashis in the first place. If your reading is ok leave it be but if its low work with a doctor to bring the reading back up to normal.
Heatherfavell, is there a blood test for omega 3-6 ratio? I didn't know this was important.
Yes it is important as the majority of people suffering from Hashimotos have low Omega 3s and high omega 6 which results in silent inflammation. As your thyroid is already inflamed from the auto immune condition it needs to be kept under control to assist the healing process. A balance between 3 and 6 is vital to reduce inflammatory markers. Its a long conversation but the difference between good fats and bad will make a big difference.
