Is it possible to have both Graves and Hashimotos?!?!

After seeing an endocrinologist yesterday I was told that I was unfortunate enough to have both Graves and Hashimotos. I didn’t think that was even possible? She said that in my teens I had had two bouts of overactive thyroid which was Graves and now as my thyroid is subclinical hypothyroid and I have antibodies that I also have Hashimotos? Seems a bit odd to me...

Did they actually test the antibodies for Grave's? Or were they just assuming you had it because your TSH was low - as it can be with Hashi's, sometimes.

I don’t think so, it was 10 years ago and 8 years ago respectively the bouts of hyperthyroidism. I’m not 100% sure to be honest.

Well, it should be on your records, so ask. But, it's perfectly possible that the diagnosis of Grave's was wrong, and you've had Hashi's all the time.

I remember you mentioning that before. I’m going back to see her in three months so I’ll start putting together a list of questions to ask.

First thing is, do you have any actual blood test results from back then?

if not you can probably get hold of copies. You are legally entitled to printed copies of all your blood test results

UK GP practices are supposed to offer online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need enhanced access to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up. They can make nominal charge for printing but many will do so for free (£10 max and can not charge at all after May 25th 2018. £50 max for full medical history. Again no charge after May 25th)

To confirm Graves' disease you needed TRab or TSI antibodies tested

You can be hyper due to Hashimoto's flare, not necessarily Graves

Yes, it is, b t many GPs and endos don't seem to understand that you can have bouts of overactivity with Hashis as it destroys your thyroid. You only have Graves if you have postive TRab or TSI antibodies. It's quite possible that you just have Hashis.

I’ll call the GP surgery and see if they’ve ever tested for TSI or TRAb.
