Hashimotos & Graves

So after suddenly going hyper following two years of being diagnosed hashimotos I’ve now been diagnosed Graves’ disease - positive antibodies for both.

I’ve started carbimazole but was wondering now with having both will I most likely end up with the surgery down the line anyway? I know I have to be on carbimazole a while to see how that turns out before considering surgery but I’m wondering if anyone else who has both antibodies has managed to control it long term?

I had an uptake scan two weeks ago and it showed a goitre but only in the last week since starting carbimazole can I feel that my thyroid has became more enlarged to the point of being uncomfortable, I can feel it sticking out in my neck which I didn’t have before even two weeks back. Is this also anything anyone has experienced?

Thanks

This is a question I have seen posted and no one seems to have a good answer. If you have unusual swelling, I would see your physician. This may be a sign of infection, not to alarm you. Neck swelling is not to be ignored when on anti thyroid medication. Hope this helps even though I cannot answer your specific question. All the best and good luck.

Thanks for replying anyway, I’m just feeling really beat after this news today of positive antibodies. I just thought it was a hashimotos swing or postpartum thyroiditis and it would sort itself out in few months so that’s helped me get through while I’ve been feeling so ill but now it just feels like I’m gonna feel this way forever. I’m 32 but I feel like an old women I don’t feel young anymore at all since being diagnosed hashimotos 2 years back but now to have Graves on top I’m just down. Not to mention the fear of they whole eye problems which I already have no idea about.

I am sorry to hear you are so down. It’s always hard to get bad news and not have information that you need. I’m sure someone will answer tomorrow who can give you better advice. I had Graves without Hashis and my neck was swelling too after I started on Tapazole. It’s upsetting and scary. And I was 30 years older when I started on that.

If it comforts you at all, I was in remission for 23 years and did OK on Tapazole until I became resistant after 2 years. Avoid stress which is a huge trigger for Graves, eat a good diet and exercise.

I just wanted to reach out for encouragement and support. Hang in there ...

Sorry to read of what you're going through Butterfly . Also sorry I can't help. My diagnosis was Hashimoto's & Hypothyroidism. Think the only Antibodies that were tested was TPO.

When is your next Endocrinologist appointment? Could you phone his/her secretary and say you have some concerns & questions would it be possible to have a call from the Consultant. & have your list of questions ready by the phone?

Have you applied for copies of your hospital records? Would that help? You can get them free of charge now if in UK.

xx

I’m hoping to see endo this week. It’s a crazy time for us just now as we are moving to Canada next month and have already given up our apartment so staying at my in laws so it’s really came at the worst time but what can you do! I’m not in uk and I have access to all my records. I know they will all say I have to give carbimazole time to work and see what happens then it’s just a waiting game I guess. None of the hyper symptoms have calmed down yet even with being on carbimazole for a week but I heard it can sometimes take a month to kick in.

Not what you're looking for?
