My advice would be to take it. Why do you want to leave it out? You're hypo, you need it.

If you don't like the Risodronat, surely there are other ways of treating osteoporosis?

Hi ,I am extremely sensitive to drugs and Risodronate very powerful ,I have tried the others ,I take it once a week and write of the day I take it as it feels like a hangover,I thought maybe new Armour on top may be too much as its early days even taken hrs apart ,will see how I feel in a few hours

Thanks for reply x

Armour isn't a drug. It's hormones - T4 and T3. And bones need good levels of hormones, too. And, I wouldn't be at all surprised if all your problems didn't start with hypo. Low T3 can completely wreck a body. So, you really do need to take it. x

I take my levothyroxine the night before instead of in the morning so that I don't miss a dose. If you go the HealthUnlocked Bone Health forum, they can give further advice. Risedronate or Alendronate are the first line treatment for post menopausal women with Osteoporosis under the NHS, I don't know about men.

Make sure you eat enough calcium rich foods. You will be prescribed calcium and vitamin D3 on NHS but you may not absorb all the calcium from the tablets so increase calcium rich foods such as sardines with bones, red or pink salmon with bones, dairy products and plenty of greens such as kale. Don't eat spinach with calcium foods as it is high in oxalic acid (you've probably read that in your calcium tablets patient information leaflet anyway). Also avoid phytic acid containing foods with calcium foods as they infere with aborption. Fish oils for omega 3 may help.

A lot of people suggest taking K2-MK7 which is good for thyroid conditions and for bones. Also possibly magnesium will help. Eating 6-12 prunes a day is said to provide boron which is good for bones. If diabetic be careful of quantities due to sugars in dried fruit. Osteoporosis Canada website has good videos of exercises and a calcium calculator.

With thyroid disease along with osteoporosis you need to optimise all your vitamin levels. Ask your doctor to test vit D, folate, ferritin and B12 if not already done. When you have results then post them here.

You have already started the armour so please keep going. Have you been ok so are? I appreciated it may be early days but things like allergies an show up early. Take the osteoporosis when prescribed but try taking half a tablet and see how you go with that. Starting with a lower dose could help your body to tolerate it better and then make be later you may be able to increase it slowly. Keep a diary of what you are taking well and any problems and see how you go.

I concur with suggestions above. I have osteoporosis and found that Bisphonates, Alendronic acid, Risedronate etc caused huge digestive issues including nausea & vomiting. I was then put on Strontium Ranelate which I tolerated very well until I was told that it was being withdrawn for safety concerns because it may cause strokes. I had one injection of Prolia before reading some other scare stories about that and then decided to not have it again. I am now un-medicated for osteoporosis and have decided that the osteoporosis drugs cause more problems than they solve. I have found lots of interesting articles and advice on the following website (Save Our Bones by Vivian Goldschmidt) including good exercises for strengthening bones naturally. You can sign up for regular emails and will receive a weekly 'Weekend Challenge' exercise designed to strengthen particular bones. Here is the section about the drugs used to treat osteoporosis:

It can be a nightmare finding what works and what doesn't do take all changes very slowly and hopefully you will find something that suits.

Hi. Not sure if this helps, but I went through a phase of having a metallic taste in my mouth a few years ago. I have never been prescribed thyroid medication and was not taking any other medication at the time. Neither GP or dentist could explain it. It eventually went. I may have been taking an iron supplement at the time but I can't remember. I had to put it down to another weird symptom of fibromyalgia.
