Last week i decided i would get my vit d tested as well as my normal thyroid blood work Doctor calls me this week

'hello can you tell me what made you have your vid tested' he asked

' because I feel pain etc and I was deficient two years ago why do you ask ?' feeling rather angry

' well your deficient again and now you have added another thing to your health, everyone in England is low in vit d we only test when we decide it necessary .' well as i am defesient seems i was right then to get it tested ' I replied it was then he started rammbling about thyroid been normal etc . I write this because I find it confusing as to why he sounded so fed because I had a vit d blood test

Never ceases to amaze me!

Doctors seem to have been told to reduce the number of vitamin D tests they do - my OH had an extreme deficiency and came to the end of his course of vitamin D. They said they can only test patients once a year, so just make sure to get plenty sun until the year passes. At least here we know you can do private tests, but a Joe public aren't as aware, and they're left in shocking circumstances!

Yes they have definitely been told to reduce. My bit D was stopped end of last year with no explanation or blood test. So I got it tested privately to find it is the lowest it has ever been. Hence I am now buying my own. I don’t mind that but at least tell me!

Yeah, my OH discovered he was barely just over the 25 level (<25 is severe deficiency), and he has osteoporosis, so should not be allowed to go any length of time with numbers that low!

But how are you able to decide for yourself what your surgery going to test?

Do you have ability to add to your request form whatever you want?

Don't get me wrong, I've done it myself but only when blood tests were hand written I'd add whatever markers I fancied but nowadays they do it electronically and I have no access to alter whatever doctor filled out on the c computer.

How do you do it?

I just tell my nurse what I need when I go for thyroid and if it’s vitamins she can usually add it on. If there’s a problem I go to my GP but usually they are accommodating. I think they like a quiet life and know I’m pretty knowledgeable on the matter.

Wow! Aren’t you lucky. No way can I get anything tested that hasn’t been authorised by my doctor.

I’m a very very fed up patient!!! I’ve insisted on getting my FT3 done every time where many struggle. I just book myself in for thyroid meds and they don’t question it. I need to get all my vitamins checked as last was September when I got diagnosed with myosotis but I’ll discuss with doctor first as I want a few doing. I have a good couple of doctors just receptionists are a pain in butt!!

I don’t see why it was such a big deal for your doctor. It doesnt sound like he has your best interest in mind. Sorry you have to go through this.

My PCP refused to test my Vit D for over a year, Finally last month the Universe sent me a great endo. Turns out my Vit D was 16. He immediately started me in prescription Vit D (50,000 IN weekly for eight weeks. He also made other changes. Two days ago I had my 3rd weekly Vit D and already I am feeling so much better- esp re a lessening of my extreme fatigue and my horrible body aches and pains. No amount of sun can overcome a deficiency this low. Unbelievable! I hope you find proper care very soon. Take care. xx irina
