Hi what is T3 and why do doctors refuse to give you it? My doctor says no as t4 converts to t3 confused!

T4 is a storage hormone, some of which converts to T3 which is the active hormone every cell in our bodies need.

If we convert well enough, we only need to take T4 (Levo) when we are hypothyroid.

If we don't convert well enough we need T3 added to our Levo.

T3 is very expensive, around £258 for 28 or 30 tablets so the NHS is very reluctant to prescribe it.

Post your latest thyroid test results to include TSH, FT4 and FT3, and we can tell you if you are converting well or not.

2 years ago you wrote you were staying off T4 - did you re-start ? How are your levels now ?

Hi yes went back on them doctors orders have not had my thyroid checked in 7months or so next available appointment is 17th of may will have them taking them but have put on about a stone in 5months hair loss and feel awful do cardio 3 days a week also and doing nothing for me

FT3 is the most important Thyroid result so make sure it is done. Doing cardio often will deplete your T3 - which is the active thyroid hormone needed in every cell of your body. Try yoga and swimming and keep the exercise gentle whilst trying to be fit and well. Your thyroid should be checked every 6/8 whilst trying to achieve the correct dose ...
