Sleeping !!

My daughter who has Downs Syndrome had total thyroidectomy in 2008 due to Graves disease - rare i know!!

She is now sleeping an awful lot and is extremely tired and emotional all of the time.

Just had bloods done and results are:

TSH 0.11

T3 4.8

T4 22.3.

She takes Levothyroxine 150mcg for 5 days and 175mcg for 2 days.

Any ideas why she is so tired - any help woukd be gratefully received. Thanks.

I'm afraid we need the ranges, please. Results without ranges are meaningless. But, it looks rather like she has a conversion problem.

Hi thanks for replying - could I ask you which ranges you mean please?

TSH 0.11 (range)

T3 4.8 (range)

T4 22.3. (range)

The ranges should be in brackets after the result. A typical FT4 range is (12 - 22). But, all labs have their own ranges, so you can only interpret a result using the range used by the lab where the test was done. :)

Hi thanks. I will ask Doctors on Monday and let you know. 🙂

Hi, just found an old serum sheet and the lab works on TSH: (0.30 - 4.50) Serum free T3 (3.1 - 6.8). Serum free T4 (11.0 - 22.0).

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The blood results look 'good' assuming typical reference intervals. Many patients still have problems with good blood hormone levels. It would depend upon how well she can express how she feels but I would be inclined to ask her doctor to trial her on a little liothyronine which is a form of 'T3' the active hormone. I would not increase her levothyroxine as high fT4 levels tend to be counterproductive. I think she should have specialist care from a paediatric endocrinologist. She has enough to cope with without potential hypothyroidism. Perhaps they could do some tests such as measuring her ankle reflex time as this is a good indicator of thyroid status.
