8 year Old Daughter’s Blood Test Results

Hello,

Having little faith in ‘within range’ and ‘no action’ Blood readings, I just wanted to confirm that these test results below are *all* indeed fine:

TSH 1.82 0.35 - 4.94

Our daughter had been feeling sick all day every day for months in the lead-up to these tests in January, but is now fine since we cut out gluten as well as dairy (which made her feel instantly sick).

She’s still sluggish and low in energy even now.

So, having just picked up a copy of these blood results from January, I’m just checking we haven’t missed anything else.

Any input gratefully received, even simply to say the docs are right for once!

Thanks as always,

Abi.

There is only TSH test there.

The fact she tests negative for coeliac but is benefiting from gluten and dairy free diet suggests you need to investigate further

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies. Plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12.

Essential to test thyroid antibodies, FT4 and FT3 plus vitamins

Private tests are available

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's

Thanks SlowDragon

I was told - can’t remember where - that kids couldn’t get tested privately via online phlebotomists like Medichecks?

Or am I wrong?

Well I would imagine you could order one on her behalf, plus extra £25 for private blood draw.

Alternatively push GP to test for thyroid antibodies, FT4 and FT3 plus vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin

Funnily enough SlowDragon , after my own experience that is what I’d originally asked the GP for on her behalf! Sigh... It’s like a replication of my own experience all over again.

Also, in terms of taking bloods from kids there’s only one NHS children’s Centre in our area which offers this, and the waiting list is currently over a month (our eldest is still waiting for hers).

From my understanding, it’s just as tricky to find private blood drawers for kids. I think I’ll have to look into it further...
