sublingual NDT

wondering about taking my wp thyroid sublingual instead of oral. i am now starting 3 doses per day---and there are too many dietary restrictions to fit in 3 doses a day. is it just as effective sublingual? also--how long after the pill melts can you eat a meal? how do the people who take 3 doses a day maintain the dietary restrictions? thanks from anyone who does this.

themomx6,

The T4 and T3 molecules are too large to be absorbed sublingually. Why not continue dividing into 2 doses?

Hi Clutter and themomx6

I was surprised to read Clutter's reply as I've taken all my thyroid meds, including WP Thyroid, sublingually [and in 3 daily doses], to good effect.

I didn't know about these molecules being too large to be absorbed in this way. I must be absorbing something because if I miss a pill, two days in a row, I feel quite ill.

Themomx6: I crunch my pills a bit then let it all dissolve under the tongue. It takes me about 15 mins for it all to disappear. I avoid food and drink a good 30 minutes before and after taking my meds. Yes, it's a pain, specially 3 x a day, but I found 2 x a day didn't last me till the evening, even with the bigger mid day dose, so I take mine: 8am; 11.30am; 3.30pm. This works for me.

I'm also intrigued how you have some WP Thyroid, as that is the best med for me yet it's been out of production since the autumn and I'm now having to take Thiroyd this past week and I dont think it's as efficacious for me as the WP.

Hels333,

As you are just starting out then I agree you are best splitting your dose as your body needs to get used to the T3 but as you. Scone more established you may be able to take it once a day and that certainly makes things easier! Somethinknive not looked into but I've heard some use sprays for Vit D sobitsxnitcin the stomach and there may be other things as well.

According to RLC Labs:

Q: Are WP Thyroid and Nature-Throid sublingual?

A: No thyroid drug is FDA approved for sublingual usage. Both tablets were formulated to be swallowed whole on an empty stomach with an 8oz glass of water.

As for your other question, all depends on the dose that you have and how long you have been taking NDT. Perhaps you can try to split them into 2 (morning and early afternoon) rather than 3. On the long run, you can also try taking them as a one dose. Several members in here stated that they take all their dose of T3 or NDT all in one go in the morning (some are on high doses).

I've known NDT can't be taken sublingually but I always put it under my tongue when I first wake up about 6am, then I go back to sleep. I'm not awake enough to sit up and drink water with it, and I reckon if it's under my tongue it's not going to go down my throat and choke me when I go back to sleep! But I'm not convinced it's the best way to take it, any suggestions? I was taking 3 grains in the morning until very recently but now 2, and another about 6pm but as I'm permanently hungry it's always difficult to do without eating for an hour before and an hour after.

Dina7,

Why are you putting it under your tongue if you know it can't be taken sublingually? You need to swallow the tablet with water and let it be absorbed via the gut.

Because I'd have to wait till properly awake, and then so hungry I wouldn't be able to wait an hour to eat. I just let it disolve under my tongue, it's usually gone by the time I wake up again.

Dina7,

Sublingual is dissolving it under your tongue.

Oh dear! I assumed that if it was meant to be taken sublingually it would be absorbed from under the tongue, but if it's not, it would disolve and then be swallowed in the usual way. Would it be better then to swallow them with a glass of water when I get up, even if it's not an hour before breakfast?

Dina7,

No, it would be better to swallow with water an hour before breakfast or two hours after.

Twice a day should be enough taken on an empty stomach with a glass of water. I allow one hour after the tablet to eat and two hours to take one after eating.

Perhaps first thing then again in the afternoon.

I take 2.75 grains ndt, when titrating i found that over 2 grains gave me a headache a few hours later so split my dose, 2 am 0.75 pm, recently got fed up fitting things in (i work rolling shifts) so tried single dose again, so far so good and no energy slumps later on beyond those caused by the shift pattern anyway. As someone else mentioned I think I was just reacting to the sudden influx if T3 which had been low for so long, now i seem to have adjusted and dont find an energy drop through the day either. I have tried sublingual on the odd occasion when Ive forgotten to take the second dose on time and there seemed no way to fit it in and not noticed any issue (however, i mistakemly thought you had to leave 4 hours after food, doh). If it is not absorbed sublingually you will swallow it carried in saliva anyway which may be why some people find ‘sublingual’ works, You will soon know if you are not absorbing by how you feel and your blood work.
