Hi there

Anyone had any experiencing with taking DHEA? My functional dr recommended I take 15mg everyday after checking my hormones but I have PCOS as well as hashi’s and feel like I’m having a flare up wit pain in my swollen thyroid, neck and head pain is squeezing, shoulder muscles are sore to touch and generally feel like utter rubbish, first thing in the morning are the worse!

He’s also recommended I lower my t4 and increase t3 which I trialed before taking DHEA and felt rubbish so went back to my usual dose. I then stupidly used fluoride toothpaste for a little while so I’m completely lost as to what is actually causing my flare up.

Could it be the DHEA??

Thanks

I don't know much about it but have you had your DHEA level checked?

Not since taking it, it’s only been 9 days but something has caused a big flare up 😓 I checked my hormones in December and he recommended a low dose of DHEA so assumed I was slightly low. I can’t find any info on it causing hashi’s to get worse though so wondered if anyone had any advice from experience.

Was your DHEA low in December then? The reason I'm asking is because a couple of years ago my adrenal saliva test showed high in range cortisol and bottom of range (one sample below) DHEA and my practioner at the time didn't suggest supplementing with DHEA, she went the route of trying to balance my levels with adaptogens.

I have 5mg x 2 a day on prescription. DHEA is a controlled substance in the UK so you can't legally buy it except on prescription. It's technically not even legal to import for your own use - daft but true. It suits me very well and I don't have acne or a beard - even after more than 5 years. I had not adverse effects from it at all, if you are taking a capsule bought from an online shop, it might be the excipents. You might do better on 7-Keto than the usual micronized DHEA

I took DHEA for a while several years ago as part of a cocktail of adrenal support I was given by a private doctor.

One was adrenal cortex, and I think that did make some difference. I felt more energetic at first, but eventually a feeling I now know is over medication, but didn't know at the time.

I think I did get a bit more spotty and grew more hair on my chin over that period, but I didn't notice any other effects and eventually titrated off.

I don't have Hashimotos, I've had a TT for cancer, but I was very hypo at the time.

hi purplejuicy

angel otn mentions 7 keto DHEA, which I think is a metabolite of DHEA ( if I remember correctly). Apparently it does not convert in the same way and may be worth looking into if you have issues with DHEA . Do your own research, see what you think. :-)
