Can you go from adrenal fatigue to taking too much adrenal supplements...?

I took Medrol (4 mg daily) for a couple of years, prescribed by hormone doctor for adrenal fatigue...one day, that felt too much, so I ordered Metavive III instead and have been doing great on it.

However, in the past couple of weeks, I have been feeling slightly hyperthyroid and wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this...I first thought I was peri-menopausal as I just turned 49, but I went to see my OB-GYN and was told my estrogen and progesterone levels are within range.

So, what I'm wondering is...could adrenal fatigue heal itself, meaning you might end up slightly hyperthyroid if taking OTC supplements along with NDT...?

anna69,

I’ve been taking Metavive iii for a few months now and I’ve found it’s helped my numbers significantly. I take about 4 1/2 capsules which is annoying but it works to keep things in the right part of each range.

I’ve recently noticed that my skin is becoming drier, my hair is shedding loads and I’m feeling really tired. Just got my test results back from the GP and my Ferritin which was previously 150 has dropped to 25 within a year. So that could explain those symptoms. Once I sort that out with Floravital and beef liver hopefully I’ll be better again. Can’t say at present that it’s helped me FEEL much better because I started it when my Ferritin was probably fine and now that my thyroid meds are good my Ferritin has dropped.

How much Metavive iii are you taking?

Only one capsule (250 mg of ACE) a day as directed on bottle..but, like you, I've noticed that I've been losing a lot of hair recently (people even commenting on it), and that my skin is so dry I start to itch...I need to apply a special cream twice a day in order to stop that from happening...interesting, thanks for sharing!

I have not had iron/ferritin levels tested (due to in late March), but I really recognise these symptoms you describe...could Metavive III (or any other similar supplement) decrease iron levels or what...?!

One capsule of Metavive iii alone simply won’t give you enough T4 and T3. There might be another reason for your hyper symptoms.

Also, I don’t know if there’s any correlation. However I’ve heard that the thyroid and thyroid meds need iron so who knows.

Itchy skin amongst other things can be low iron..................

Sorry, I have been taking ADRENAVIVE III which is why I wondered if adrenal cortex extract (ACE) can cause hyper symptoms if taken long term with NDT...?

I also have the same problem and also take Adrenavive. But it isn' t my cortisol that is the problem. But what I do have is low DHEA.

Why not have a cortisol saliva test done to see how well your adrenals are. You may have low or high cortisol or low DHEA.

Just a thought.

Good idea, thanks! I will look into it.

I too took Medrol for many years - I think you may have been to the same Dr I went too ???

Yes you are overstimulating the adrenals - and if you have stopped taking the Medrol which I hope you stepped down slowly - then the adrenals are without the Medrol it wanted and now taking something to stimulate a rather tired adrenal gland system. The adrenals and thyroid are an amazing piece of kit - but when they go wrong - because they are a life giving hormone system they will grab all the vitamins and minerals and proteins etc. to keep you going ................I suspect you have now made yourself deficient in various items and the trick now is to find out what they are..................if you are going hyper then the adrenals do not want that stimulation you are causing it issues and overplaying it. Can you tell me exactly what your symptoms are in detail and I will try to work out what vits and mins you are lacking - I have been through and in fact always go through the same with these deficiencies because although I am a diagnosed Adrenal Insufficient patient - they aren't happy most of the time and I suffer dreadfully with deficiencies that I have to put back to keep going.

Mainly symptoms of relatively mild hyperthyroidism: tendency to sweat profusely, restless sleep (I have no problems falling asleep but often wake up around 2.30-3 am and cannot go back to sleep), tired and wired during the day...my latest thyroid labs looked good (I'm on Thyroid-S to the TSH doesn't matter):

TSH <0.01 (0.2-4.0)

FT4 1.2 (0.7-1.5)

FT3 3.7 (2.2-4.2)

I went to the lab 24 hours after taking NDT.
