Does anyone know if these Thyroid support supplements are ok to give my elderly Mum on 50 g of Levothyroxine please ? There’s a note on them re: Kelp or can you recommend one ?
Also I’m on Nature Throid - are they ok for me ? Thanks everyone -
Is there a good list anywhere of the supplements we should take for low thyroid apart from what I’m reading in Amy myers book ( but they’re in USA )

It's not a good idea to take iodine unless tested and found to be deficient, and then only under the supervision of an experienced practioner. Iodine is anti thyroid and used to be used to treat Hypothyroidism, so not a good idea for someone who is Hypo or has Hashimoto's.
If you think your mum needs some kind of thyroid support, post her most recent results, with reference ranges, and members can comment on whether she is optimally medicated. Also, it is a good idea to have vitamins and minerals tested as these need to be at optimal levels for thyroid hormone to work properly:
Hi, I think SeasideSusie means that iodine used to be used to treat hyperthyroidism; i.e. to lower overactive thyroid, which is why it isn't a good idea for underactive thyroid.
Yes, you're right Anthea55 and thank you. I did mean iodine used to be used to treat hypERthyroidism, my tablet sometimes changes words from a list that comes up and I don't always double check that my original word has been used. Apologies Avidreader
Easily done. My email (Thunderbird) has been known to pick up a different person from that intended and when I first used it I didn't realise. There was one that went to the wrong person unfortunately. I try to be more careful now.
Those thyroid supplements are for people who are not taking Levothyroxine or NDT. Kelp is high in iodine so I would not take it while taking Levothyroxine or NDT. Better to post your thyroid results and ranges to check you and your mother are optimally dosed on Levothyroxine and NDT and to have ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and folate levels checked before supplementing.
Hi i think its not a good idea to take thyroid based supplements when you are taking levothyroxine but its better to have a good planned diet so that you can get the nutrients naturally. Good luck
I have read the above comments with much interest as I value these highly knowledgeable people.
I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in 2015. After linking into this site i had some private blood tests taken in March 2017 and found out I had Hashimoto antibodies. I went to see a private Endo in April 2017. I was taking Levothyroxine 125 mcg and nothing else. My Endo suggested I try the multi vitamin Thyroid Support for 60 days. This contained: Selenium, Manganese, Chromium, L-Tyrosine, Kelp and Iodine. He also increased my Vitamin D and put me on Vitamin B12.
At my next blood test 4 months later: I found both my Hasimoto's antibodies had significantly decreased. However I stopped taking these having read here that I should not be on Iodine. Instead I took Selenium and all the other vitamins recommended here. I also went on a Gluten Free diet.
Now here is the poser - My recent blood tests have shown that my Thyroid antibodies have increased and gone back to where they were originally, and my TSH has gone up.
Just maybe I should have continued with this Thyroid Support as it was evidently working for me.
I hate the fact everything’s so hit & miss. & we have to rely on self diagnosing & hope we get it right 😩 I find it all exhausting on top of my everyday life ! Just keeping up with the strict VERY healthy diet is full time chef job !
ha ha....I have only just read this post Avidreader and it certainly struck a chord with me....... so you get my sympathy... (I too have had to take this diet thing quite seriously to feel half normal...but as you have said in earlier posts.....boring...awful.....but so worth it for the health benefits x
