Confused if I’m truly Hyper

Hello, I’m so confused after Don’t know if I am truly hyper?!

I was hypo for the last 15 yrs and took synthroid and was fine. This year I ended up in the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. I was told I’m now hyper! For the last 2 months I’ve been extremely ill. I was taken off synthroid and put on methimazole 50 mg. Then, I got worse. My blood pressure was very high, I gained 40 lbs, I felt like I was dying. My levels changed every week. I’m confused if I am still hyper or am I hypo. I’m big, swollen, hair falling out in chunks, high blood pressure etc. My last exam from last week:

TSH 0.023

T4 1.70

T3 2.41

Any advice is truly appreciated. I live in the US so maybe the scale is different?

Thank you,

Rita

Do you have ranges for these results?

Ranges are:

TSH 0.358- 3.740

T4 0.76- 1.46

T3 0.70' 1.79

A month ago I had a TSH of 76.060 and now, it's 0.023

I honestly doubt you are hyper. Especially if you had a TSH of 76!! You may have been having a 'Hashi's flare'... do you know if you have raised antibodies? Have you ever had them tested? People with Hashi's can have flare ups where their thyroid is attacked and releases a lot of stored hormone, making them temporarily 'hyper', but they're not really hyper. Your symptoms suggest you are still hypo.

Thank you for your opinion! I feel hypo. I don't know if I was tested for antibodies. Do you know what the test is called so, that I can ask my Dr?

in reply toRweir39

You can ask for TPO Ab (thyroid peroxidase antibodies) and TG Ab (thyroglobulin antibodies), however your doctor may not agree to it. If not, you can get them done privately via a finger prick test. Medichecks do a comprehensive test including TSH, T4, T3 and both antibodies (Thyroid Check Plus, currently £59) which is very good.

In the UK here so don't know what it's like for you there, but best of luck!

Hi... Rweir. I am also in the US. Here is a link to the STTM (Stop The Thyroid Madness) site in the US which lists some labs and what tests are suggested.

Drop down to the 'Hashimoto's' headed paragraph in the link below. Explains antibody tests.

I tend to agree with Jadzhia's assessment that you might be suffering from hashimoto's. You need to find a thyroid-literate practitioner and they aren't easy to locate. If you join the 'NaturalThroidHormones' yahoo website (they are closed until Tuesday), they maintain a list of doctors by state that might prove helpful.

Correct. I'm so confused and over my endocrinologist just telling me to hang on and, wait for my levels to get better.

I felt deathly ill for a month and just now getting better. I will call my Dr tomorrow to discuss again. Thank you for your input ☺

When you have Hashimotos - auto-immune thyroiditis - you can swing from being Hypo to being Hyper. Please read up on Hashimotos and educate your Endocrinologist.

You will be low in B12 - folate - Ferritin - VitD - so have all those tested and return with results and ranges in a new post.

Hi

Just to clarify it’s impossible to be hypo ( which you definitely were) then hyper. Only too many meds or as the others say a hashimotos flare make your test results appear as if you are hyper. You will always be under active if as we assume it is a flare.

Testing your vitamin levels like b12 d3 folate ferretin and having your antibodies tested will help. My sister is a scientist out in USA so I know the tests are available.

Gluten and sugar and most likely dairy I personally gave up and felt much better. How are you digesting your food?

Also can I ask have your adrenals been tested- dhea and cortisol?

Best wishes

Helen
