Hunger - hypo or hyper

Hi

After a stressful year (lots of tragedy) my thyroid is playing up. In 2011 had very low antibodies and low energy and felt like a new person taking medication. Everything has been okay till now, also had a miscarriage in January. Initially was feeling exhausted dizzy spells so increased my L-Thyroxin from 75mg to 75mg + a quarter tablet for about two weeks. Think this was a mistake as I went to hyper, bit I did get more energy. Then I started some issues with Low Blood Sugar and anxiety . Stopped L Thyroxin for about 10 days and am now taking a half of 75mg. All of this after getting advice from Dr. I am extremely hungry always and need to eat every two hours (and am still hungry). Have a mixture of nervous energy but sometime exhausted. Have difficulty concentrating. Am battling to find a good endocrinologist. Waiting for blood tests from last week. But wondering if anyone has experience with this hunger - is this a hypo or hyper symptom? Do have high antibodies in blood.

I am underactive and am rarely hungry now. When I was young and up untill my thyroid became underactive, I had radioactive iodine, I had a very good appetite and rarely gained weight. Don't know if this helps you but I also check thing on the NHS website. If you live in the UK.

Hi

How are you feeling now? Do you see an endocrinologist? I've never been referred to one! I have under active thyroid, I have to eat little and often cos of my other conditions but I'm hungry not long after I've eaten, Ive only been like this recently , I've had under active thyroid since Jan 17. My appetite has recently shrunk cos and feeling sickly quite a lot of the time due to Nash (non alcoholic steatohepititis) caused by meds from my DRS. It feels really strange being hungry and sickly at the the same time!! Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

I saw one when I was first ill with o reactive thyroid. Would never want it again, had it twice and was so ill. I take 100mcgs a day. Overweight, not much energy, come home from work some days and fall asleep. Also menopausal or gone through it not sure really. I try to eat smaller meals and snack on nuts in between, sometimes I admit I just eat rubbish. Xxx

Always had a problem with blood sugar when I was younger. Used to eat every two hours as an adult always hungry and quite small. As a child I ate the same amount od food as my brothers, yikes but I was hungry. I would, if I hadn't eaten enough, come in from playing, feeling quite unwell and would have to eat something sweet firsts then have a sandwich or fruit or anything to make me feel better. No problem with diabetes though just how I was. 😏

If we are diagnosed as hypothyroid we cannot become hyperthyroid. What can happen is if we take too much levothyroxine which would cause problems.

Your final dose before your reduction was not too high as some have to take high doses of levo to recover.

You could, however, be sensitive to the fillers/binders in the levothyroxine you took. You could ask pharmacist to give you a different make of it. Another tip is to take one antihistamine tablet 1 hour before levothyroxine, If this relieves you ask for another levothyroxine.

Think this was a mistake as I went to hyper

What exactly made you think you'd 'gone hyper'? In other words 'over-medicated', because you cannot go from hypo to hyper. Was it a blood test? If so, what was the result? Or was it symptoms? If so, what were the symptoms?

I really don't think that hunger is a definitive symptom of either hypo or over-medication. Possibly nothing to do with thyroid, but could be due to many things. :)

Blood tests should be done after 6-8 weeks on constant unchanging dose of Levothyroxine

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

Ask GP to test vitamins and thyroid antibodies as well as full thyroid function tests

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Medichecks currently have an offer on until end of May - 20% off
