'High' Serum B12, 'Above high' Folate, Low Ferritin 51ug/L (11.0 - 307)

Having been ill for a long time and still searching for answers like so many people, I am wondering what the above may mean. Is it possible to have false readings of highs caused by medication or the body not being able to utilise vitamins and iron for some reason? I have a Haemoglobin count of 129g/L (120.0 - 150) a high TSH of 6.81 too. Any thoughts?

It would be easier for people to help you understand your results if you posted a fuller picture, the range of blood tests done, the results and the laboratory ranges along with these. You'll get good feedback then.

Bluecat4,

TSH 6.81 means you are undermedicated if you are taking Levothyroxine. If you are not, 6.81 is over range and your GP should prescribe Levothyroxine as you are symptomatic.

Haemoglobin 129 is within range (normal).

Folate over range isn't a problem. Usually means your diet is rich in green leafy veg. Vegetarians and vegans usually have high folate.

Ferritin is optimal halfway through range. You can raise ferritin by supplementing iron which should be taken with 1,000mg vitamin C to aid absorption and minimise constipation. If you take Levothyroxine take it 4 hours away from iron.

B12 will be high if you supplement methylcobalamin (B12). If you don't supplement and B12 is considerably over range you may want to discuss it with your GP as it can indicate illness.

I am not on Levothyroxine though was for nine months and it made me much worse. GP did not take any notice of the many symptoms i have eg. hair loss, eye lash and eye brow loss, weight gain, freezing cold, dry skin, constant ear in fections and water infections, very pale skin, no energy, bone pain, weakness, poor balance, I could go on . . . . .

I have a very poor diet as I cannot stand to prepare foods, so don't cook. Eat mostly toast, yoghurt, nuts, bananas, blueberries. I take no supplements.

Bluecat4,

NHS does not diagnose hypothyroidism by symptoms but by thyroid blood results. TSH 6.81 indicates primary hypothyroidism and the need for Levothyroxine replacement. Your symptoms are typical of hypothyroid symptoms.

You need iron to raise low ferritin which may be low due to hypothyroidism or poor diet.

Bone pain can be caused by vitamin D deficiency. Ask your GP to test. Very little vitD is sourced from diet, most comes from sun on the skin and most of us need to supplement D3 between Oct and APril.

Your B12 is not high. Typical range is 160-800ish (varies lab to lab)

You might look at testing active B12 and MMA

Vitamin D at 61nmol is too low. Supplementing alongside co factors of Vitamin K2 plus magnesium

Also have you had TG antibodies tested

DIO2 gene test

What is MMA please?

I am looking into supplementation and have just paid privately to have the complete tests needed including TG and RT3, then plan on seeing a private Dr with those test results. The above tests were from last month and I was on anti epileptic drugs which i understand can alter blood tests.

Not sure what the D102 test is.

labtestsonline.org.uk/under...

This explains why you might consider it

But presumably anti epileptic drugs could be significantly affecting thyroid. You need to discuss with your specialists and look at interactions of medications

Just to make it easier to search, the test is dio2 (short for Deiodinase 2)- the first 3 are letters not numbers (I've written it lowercase to show this).

Find a place where you can have your Microbiome sequenced and get a functional analysis. Are you in UK or US? You can email me - MARTHA.carlin@mac.com

You gut bacteria (Microbiome) is your internal pharmacy. It is being destroyed by modern living - antibiotics in the food and water, food preservatives, antifungals in bread.

Read some or all of these.

The Mind Gut Connection

You will see the connection to all health problems. Fixing it requires something equal to regenerative farming. Filter your water. Only eat meat that you know has not had antibiotics. avoid preservatives and packaged foods.

Pathogens in the gut steal iron. They are also involved in the production and use of various vitamins

I am in the UK. All the extra test cost so much and my funds are limited so I can only go at a slow pace though have learnt a fair bit so far.

I'll look for some of that reading material and see if I can relate to it.

I have always been told to drink water and have done but our local council put fluoride in it, it's disgusting to taste, and I have found out that fluoride is not helpful fo immune systems, thyroid, adrenal problems etc so I have now switched to bottled mineral water and also a fluoride free toothpaste.

Thank you for all the information, I appreciate it very much.
