Basal calcification

Hi. I wouldn't be surprised if many haven't heard if this. I certainly hadn't, and it was by chance that I found out. I slightly jarred my lower left back exercising. I started getting some tingling down my left side. I saw my doctor who was concerned it could be a minor stroke. (I really didn't think it was anything other than the nerve being impinged on). However, I had to be assessed at the hospital. This led to a CT scan, a vascular Scan and a MRI scan. No driving for 4 days while I waited for all of the above, plus aspirin & statins. Of course there was nothing wrong, but the CT scan did show some calcification of the brain. The consultants first statement to me, was that my GP will probably get my thyroid function tested, as this is a common cause of calcification. I immediately told him I was hypothyroid. He then said this is probably the cause. Calcification usually occurs in older people and is a cause of dementia. I myself had no idea being hypo, was linked to this, and it's purely by chance I found out. Does anyone else know of the link?

I'm not sure if levothyroxine or NDT stops the calcification. I have to see my GP to discuss this and will obviously know more then.

You might find the above link helpful.

Do you eat or drink a lot of high calcium foods?

Do you take calcium supplements?

Do you take lots of antacids?

Do you have high vitamin D?

Vitamin D supplements will increase the calcium absorbed from the diet. On this forum people are advised to supplement magnesium and vitamin K2 when they take vitamin D supplements. This helps calcium to deposit in bones and teeth rather than in soft tissues.

A rather more serious link, which may be irrelevant to you :

Don't statins increase calification? Or is that just in the arteries?

I was put on statins for 4 days only. Hypothyroidism is linked to calcification. The CT scan was done before I started the statins.
