I'm after some help please, I recently was referred and saw an Endo regarding my Hypothyroidism which I requested after a private BT showed above normal reverse T3. Anyway he was quite patient but insisted on trying to find a solution to my excessive tiredness (I had complained about my weight gain not tiredness). Anyway I had a Cortisol and ACTH test done at 9am and the results were Cortisol - 256nmol/L and ACTH - 11.3 ng/L -(it says normal at the side of it ) in the letter I have received it says if the cortisol test is abnormal I will call her for a SST for cortisol. - It then says I'm requesting SST for cortisol and will see her in clinic, she will be contacted in due course - Am I missing something? if the results are normal why have I got to go for the SST test? I'm so confused!

Short synacthen test tests your adrenals' reactions when stimulated. Often done if bloods are at low end or high end of normal (but very few peopel ahve an abnormal test - if you do you just get sent for Ct scan or MRI, and Insulin stress test, which is truly vile). Probably endo has to find something other than hypo.
Thank you x the whole letter just contradicts itself all the way through, he said he thought I had Hashimotos - I hope I don't get the insulin stress test!
If you're going to be sent for an SST test, you should know how it should be conducted, what preparation to make, what to expect, and how the results should be interpreted.
