T3 & sore throat: has nobody else had sore throats on thyroid treatment?

Swapped from naturethroid (1 grain) to T3 only (12.5mcg split in two) & still having throat pain. Took my first dose this morning but just sick of the pain & nonimprovement. Lasted a week. Seems like every single thyroid treatment causes this for me.

I suspect ferritin still too low (getting labs), B12 been injected & that also makes me ill but necessary... waiting on cortisol 4 sample results.

I'm beginning to think that I'm just supposed to have low FT3/4 & feel crap

Do you take your tablets with one Full Glass of water and wait about an hour before eating?

Things happen very slowly in the Thyroid world so you have to give things a chance to work. You are only on a small dose with just starting out but you can only increase slowly. When you get up to a dose you feel happy on then you need to test but you must get FT3 included in your testing as that is the most important one to know how you are progressing.

Have you previously been on Levo only. If so and you post those results it could give us an idea of how good you are. Inverting. Once taking T3 in any form you can't tell as the results are read differently. Patience is need both with Thyroid Meds and Vitamins and Minerals.

My NHS doc refused to prescribe as my TSH was great :D I haven't done the DIO2 test and honestly can't manage any more tests. I just wonder if the pain in my thyroid is telling me I don't need it. It seems wrong and no other posts are mentioning it.

I have taken metavive, naturethroid and T3, all with the same response. I increased metavive quite a bit but the pain was so bad I sat and cried with it so obviously reduced then switched over.

What are your levels of vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12?

If supplementing B12 are you also taking B complex to keep the B's in balance

But need to stop any supplements with biotin in 3-4 days prior to testing as biotin (in B complex) can falsely affect test results

I'm having these done again but after this, will have to stop as it's just too expensive to keep testing. I always take a B complex and make sure I have magnesium, selenium etc. to keep it all in balance.

You're probably still under-medicated. 12.5 mcg is only a tiny dose. In fact, with a small dose like that, it might be better to take it all in one go, to try and saturate your receptors. Splitting the dose isn't always a good idea. :)

Thanks everyone. I ended up stopping the tablets last Sunday. My throat was so painful and I felt so unwell, I just gave up. My cortisol results just came back and I have a mid-range first thing, over range midday, mid-range 5pm and over range 10pm result. Low DHEA. I can't afford more than one more lot of tests but have arranged a full iron panel on Monday with medichecks which covers a few more things too. (ferritin etc., vitamin D, FT4 and TSH, and essential one which will check mcv & so on. medichecks.com/health-check...

For five days I've had ok energy - less joint pain, been able to focus on things and do 10k steps a day. The throat got worse again but today I've felt really yuck - woke with funny taste in mouth, almost metallic, sore throat and sore mouth, also feeling wobbly but my heart rate is ok and my temperature is a bit low but not a fever, so I suspect I'm fighting a back-to-school virus.

I will let you know what the results are as there is no meds or iron for 7 full days and the results will be more like how my body is without tablets. I suppose that I am just unsure if I really need the T3/T4 given how reluctant my doc is to treat it and the impact of the hormones on my own gland. I realise I've been undermedicated for a long time so not sure if this will be normal.. it's just not something people report often. :0/

hi, how are you doing now? Did you figured out what caused your sore throat? Im getting same problem from T3, be it NDT or T3.
