I've seen a gazillion posts about Apple cider vinegar helping with the digestion, but I have a couple of questions...
1 How much and how often is advisable? With every meal? Once a day? Teaspoon? Tablespoon?
2 Is it specifically Apple cider vinegar that's advisable, or would any vinegar do the job? I always have distilled malt vinegar in the house for washing my sports kit when Fairy can't cope (the only detergent I've tried that I'm not allergic to). Would the distilled malt vinegar be just as good? Which also begs the question - if it's cleaning the sports kit, what's it doing to my insides ha ha A bit like coke being good for cleaning coins, I suppose?
I picked up some Apple cider vinegar over the weekend and have been adding about half a teaspoon to water or cordial once a day since Saturday, after my latest episode of slow and uncomfortable digestion last week. Can't say it's done much yet, but it has only been three days!
Thanks

Hi Achilles, I've heard about using vinegar for years, they've written books about it but until I watched something on You Tube and recently all the attributes of vinegar I decided to try it. But in conjunction with watching what I eat...mainly carbs and sugars. I wondered about insulin resistance as well as breaking down nutrients when stomach acid is low. It does block some starch and adds probiotics by killing off bad bacteria. So the suggestion was to use unfiltered vinegar because of the enzymes. People worry about the acidic nature on the tooth enamel so what I have been doing is taking about a teaspoon in a few teaspoons of water and have something prepared to eat right away. While four times a day is what was recommended, I don't eat four times a day but it is going to change your microbiome and I've had moments of discomfort. I took charcoal tablets that one time. Even if you only do it two or three times per day I think you will make headway. I think you will see good effects but I don't think 1/2 teaspoon once a day will do it.
Hi, I recently started taking it myself. Bragg, Organic Raw-unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with The "Mother" is the one take. My understanding is you can take up to 1 tbl mixed with a full glass of water, warm if you can. daily. I started with 1 tsp first. You should drink it with a straw if you can to protect your tooth enamel. After I finish drinking it I rinse my mouth out with plain water. Don't brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes afterwards.
So long as it's organic apple cider vinegar with the mother AND unpasteurised it's good.
I've tried many I found biona the best but we buy in bulk so much cheaper.
You are right in what you are taking but never in a hot/ warm drink as heating it pasteurises it and makes it less effective( Mike Adams scientist)
If you continue long term to have stomach problems then I'd suggest a comprehensive stool analysis test thro say Genova. If your stomach acid is v low/ none existent you'll need betaine hcl. They also test probiotics and bad bacteria. ( you get a reading out of 4) Also you can test for parasites or specific bugs.
I recently read that ACV makes an excellent deodorant as it kills off the bacteria that causes the odour. I now use it every day and am amazed by the effectiveness here in sweaty Crete. 😊
The vinegar smell has gone by the time I dress ...... !
Hi I have to say I find it works very well on me, I take one TSP of apple cider vinegar with one tsp lemon juice in half a glass of water about ten mins before eating and I don't get that feeling of the food being in your stomach for ages like a block of cement any more, I also have taken itI when I have indigestion and it works takes the pain away in about 20 minutes, but don't get that much now only if I've forgotten to take the apple cider vinegar in the first place.
Any edible vinegar would increase your stomach acid & help digestion, as does a glass of wine or cider with meals. However, organic apple cider vinegar with a probiotic content is better for digestion & improving the make up of good gut bacteria. The best ACV has a layer of stuff at the bottom of the bottle, which should be mixed with a gentle shake before use & makes the vinegar slightly cloudy.
I like ACV on salads, & tried adding a spoon to the water I take THs with, before opting for a pinch of ascorbic acid powder(not fizzy vit C). Try a teaspoon in water half an hour before your meals, for a few days. If that feels ok, try two, then 3. I tend to use it as a condiment now, as I drink kefir 3 times a day, which has helped my digestion, I'm not sure if the ACV probiotics would harm the kefirans.
I use white vinegar as a water softener in my washing machine, & put it in the fabric softener drawer. I also soak grapefruit zest in white vinegar to use as a cleaning spray.
Thanks all. Looks like it's apple cider to drink, distilled malt for the running kit.
I think the simplest solution is to add small amount to cordial and keep drinking all day, which I do in this weather anyway, especially after my little trip to A&E with kidney stones last month.
I've tried them, but not too keen. They contain cayenne pepper, are rather hot on the tongue and don't work as well as drinking it. I've tried both types of ACV (one with "The Mother" and one without) and it makes no difference, though that may not necessarily be the case for other people.
