Well that went well...NOT!

My wife had been on T3 only for 5 weeks, as the T4 75 mcg + T3 10mcg she was on previously, while better than T4 only, was still not great, however, when I stopped her T4 (Levo), and put her on a slightly increased (15mcg from 10) of T3 Lio only, she immediately improved, at which we were both delighted.

At endo visit: Me " Dr, I have got my wife back."

E: " How so?"

I described her new protocol as above.

Endo went ballistic, " You are not allowed to treat your wife, I am not allowed to treat my own family (I bet not haha), you could have killed her (yes that is what he said!) giving her more T3 without T4 which is the biologically active substance. (Huh?)"

Me " Dr, have you ever had to treat patients with T3 only?"

" Only those with a complete thyroidectomy." (so why didn't they die?)

As a result of this appointment, and some placatory noises from me, he did agree to increase T3 to 20mcg per day and reduce his previous Levo dose from 100mcg to 50mcg, and at least did not kick us into touch.

We shall see how it goes, however, if she does not maintain her previous improvement when on T3 only, we will go back to NDT.

I'm not medical but I know that T4 is not the active substance, T3 is???

What is he talking about. The body has to be able to convert the inactive T4 (Pro-hormone) to the active hormone of T3 to be able to utilise it. What sort or Endo is he?? You may find he is more of a'diabetes' specialist.

I cannot convert T4 to T3, so am on T3 only, for the last 7 years, having tried to make T4 work for over 20 yrs. It didn't. I have had NO adverse affects on T3. Only positive improvement going me a life back!

Be prepared to stand up to him, he obviously does not know as much as he should. Stick to your guns, for your wife's sake.

'you could have killed her' How cruel and dramatic of him to suggest such a thing. And I'm pretty sure that had your wife had problems with T3 only, she would have known and been able to tell you and do something about it.

Endo's and GP's try to make out that T3 is the most dangerous 'drug' in the world. When asked they 'flap' and say it can cause heart problems. I have yet to hear anyone say they are told anything other.

Being un/mistreated/undertreated for HypoT is more likely to lead to further problems, heart problems, diabetes to name a few. Not to mention premature death!

What medication does not have side affects? It is 'bulls***".

And I would go as far as to suggest that the fact that your wife did not have any adverse affects to the T3 only, may indicate her need for T3, perhaps T3 only?

Many gyms/bodybuilders import and use T3 to lose weight! Unregulated, not monitored.

It does help to know more about the subject and to be able to question the Endo's suggestions and counteract them if you don't agree. they won't like it but how can they argue if you have proof of your convictions. Hopefully

Your wife is very lucky to have such an understanding and pro active hubby. Well done you for understanding and supporting her.

Good luck.

You questioned an Endo? How very dare you? Dont you know your place? Please learn how to grovel and tug your forelock! :)

They have such self belief that if anyone even hints at questioning their high status, they are completely thrown and usually get rude and agressive. There normal clinic is a stream of completely beaten women who are desperate for help, so despearate we dont say a word and come out and have a good cry in the loos!

Well done for the help and love you are giving your wife - and taking notice of how the different drugs can change a life completely. Keep fighting!
