Another wasted endo visit

6 months after my wife's useful visit to Dr xxx, we have today had an appointment with an eminent endo professor. Currently my wife is on 25mcg T4 and 15mcg T3, but still has bad days.

Some of his comments, paraphrased, were:

"I don't believe taking T3 does any good, as it only lasts an hour in the body."

" As long as the TSH test is at the low level of range, the levels of thyroxine are fine, and TSH is the only test of any use."

"All other symptoms such as brain fog, dizzy spells, constipation, headaches, and nausea are as a result of something other than hypothyroidism, ie old age (79) and memory deterioration."

"NDT is rubbish, made up of who knows what, and should never be taken."

"Private medical tests are rubbish, are not worth the money, and are only offered to take advantage of vulnerable people such as yourself."

We came away, at least retaining 10mcg T3 and upping T4 to 50mcg. A dosage we have unsuccessfully tried previously. Thanks a lot Doc!!!

I was very impressed with his expertise!

He sounds totally ignorant... even worse because he claims as facts things which are plain wrong!

Wow! Hope you didn’t pay to see him privately. If it wasn’t so serious his ‘opinions’ would be laughable.

Just curious - was he young or old?

Supposedly he had already retired, unfortunately someone disinterred him!

Was he a thyroid specialist ? - many endos specialise in diabetes. Wow - you’ve had the privilege of meeting an endo with no empathy who tells lies - but not unusual for many on here I’m afraid.

"I don't believe taking T3 does any good, as it only lasts an hour in the body."

LIE! It is shorter term than T4 because you USE it! About 24 hours. If it does no good and only lasts an hour, why do they test for it and give it to patients in intensive care?

" As long as the TSH test is at the low level of range, the levels of thyroxine are fine, and TSH is the only test of any use."

What a n*b! That’s fine if you have no thyroid problem, but if you do you have to look at the thyroid hormones to see what is happening. TSH can be used to diagnose, but not to treat!

"All other symptoms such as brain fog, dizzy spells, constipation, headaches, and nausea are as a result of something other than hypothyroidism, ie old age (79) and memory deterioration."

How dare he! This is the usual excuse - you must be mad, stupid or senile if you think your continuing hypo symptoms are down to actually being hypo! And since when did memory deterioration make you constipated? Tw*t.

"NDT is rubbish, made up of who knows what, and should never be taken."

Lol! It will tell you on the packet what it’s made up of - can he read? If he’s older he may well have prescribed it himself before the ‘great’ cure-all Levo came on the market!

Private medical tests are rubbish, are not worth the money, and are only offered to take advantage of vulnerable people such as yourself."

The labs that do private tests also do tests for other organisations - some of them for the NHS. And how else are we supposed to monitor our health when we find ourselves faced by ignorance and arrogance like his?

Overall, what a patronising, disrespectful b*st*rd - because of age he has assumed senility and vulnerability, rather than respecting someone trying to understand and manage their chronic condition. I truly wish I could punch him in the nose for you. I think you should complain to PALs and his boss about his manner and bonkers unscientific views.

Sorry you have had to experience this. It makes me very sad. Glad you are still fighting - don’t let them keep you ill. 🤸🏿‍♀️#fightforyourthyroid

Having now got his name correct, and looked him up, it appears he is not a thyroid specialist, for all his lofty position as a Professor would suggest. In all his extensive on line hype I can find no mention of the thyroid or its diseases.

Thanks, but to be honest, we expected nothing more from past experience. We are booked for further endo visit in 4 months, but as this one was advised to be a different endo, there is no way to guarantee, on the NHS, that he won't be there again.

PALs might be able to help you to ensure you see someone different. If I ended up walking in and finding the same one again I’d be tempted to turn on my heel and walk straight out. You’d get better (and more polite) advice on google than with that t*ss*r.! Wish I could come with you! 🤸🏿‍♀️

Sorry, but previous experience of PALS showed that they are the medical equivalent of the NHBC. They are the gatekeepers of the medical establishment and its administrators, and exist to protect them.

Agree with that statement!!

I have now established who this man is. Please PM me if you wish for a heads up.

It is abomnable that the 'professional' is so poorly trained. Not one person will find relief from their symptoms if they listen to him. The pity is - that the majority of the medical professionals haven't a clue about what the purpose of thyroid hormones are in the body.

T3, for instance is the Active Thyroid Hormone, T4 being inactive. It has to convert to T3 but some of us cannot do so effectively.

T3 is absorbed quite quickly into the T3 receptor cells and we have millions but the effect of a single dose lasts - because once in the receptor cells it sends out 'waves' which lasts between one to three days for that one single dose.

They are so very ignorant about thyroid hormones and the diagnosing and prescribing for one of the commonest autoimmune diseases. No wonder so many patients struggle. The professionals have no clue of what is a symptom or another condition but will probably prescribe anything but hormones to try to relieve the patients' symptoms.

Taking NDT into consideration, is he completely unaware that people died a dreadful death before they invented/introduced NDT in 1892? which is made from pigs' thyroid glands and is more conducive to the human body than synthetic levothyroxine (T4 only - should convert to T3). NDT also contains T3, T4, T3, T2 and calcitonin and no-one died after 1892 with a most dreadful, lingering, illness - myxedema coma.

Before TSH and blood tests were introduced - Big Pharma saw a great potential - All doctors knew all clinical symptoms but nowadays they don't seem to be at all knowledgeable about the purpose of the thyroid gland
