My country is out of NDT.

I'm a Canadian that takes rx natural dessicated thyroid. I called the pharmacy today to refill. I am taking 180 mg now, everyday. I was told that NDT is out and backordered until at least June. And after many calls to many pharmacies all over the province, I learned it is Canada wide. I'm so shocked that pharmacies and doctors were not pre-warned. Pharmacies have only now, 1-3 days.

My doctor is suggesting thyroxine and synthroid.

This terrifies me!! I'm wondering if anybody could advise me, or share what I should expect, or even how to transition.

I medicate myself, my doctor keeps my t3 very low. Just barely over the normal line. Because my tSH is low in her opinion. We know that this is wrong, so I worry she won't understand how to advise me on the new medications.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I think they are trying to stamp out NDT altogether. I think world-wide. Big pharma has a lot to answer for as they make more money from levothyroxine, plus any of other medications for the remaining symptoms so they'd lose out.

I can give you details of an NDT which is without prescription and it was developed by Dr John Lowe who was an Adviser to Thyroiduk.org.uk. He lived in Florida and his wife now runs this part and it is called Thyro-gold, doesn't require a prescription, and is from New Zealand grass-fed cows.

It is run by his Widow, Tammy and link is below:

shaws, I think this too, across the board: their agenda is NO to anything except T4 and using their stupid little tests. Barbarism Back Big Style :-(

Surprised people in the USA have not initiated a Class Action against ???

Dr Skinner did try the start of something here... someone really needs to carry that forward... it all falls on cloth ears!

Dr Skinner was so concerned (his website is now closed even though I liked to post some of his comments) due to the fact he was getting so many patients as they were unwell, also ones who had mysterious diseases (by other doctors) and he found they were all hypo. He invited every single Endocrinologist to a Conference to discuss the parlous state of patients undiagnosed/untreated/undertreated and one by one they refused. The last one on the night before. He said it was a 'parlous' state for patients and it still is. For his many appearances before the GMC,complaints didn't come from his patients. One of his patients saw another Endo and she mentioned Dr S and he said 'we've got him now'. What kind of person/people run down a doctor who is helping patients when they didn't/couldn't/refuse to.

shaws - Dr Skinner readily diagnosed me hypothyroid in Feb 2010 (after x2 NHS endo professors said, "No' - my TSH was only 3.8 - but with signs/ symptoms that ANYONE would have diagnosed): I had suffered for years prior to that, the full gamut including heart issues.

I loved Dr Skinner, even did a jig with him at his Glasgow office. Yes, I am aware of how disgracefully he was treated (as Barry Peatfield too), plus the arrogant ignorance displayed towards the amazing Dr Lowe - these quacks are a disgrace to medicine.

I am currently having thrown back at me that "Dr Skinner isn't here and the current endo... doesn't agree with his diagnosis" (and Dr Peatfield diagnosed too + really poor adrenal function), so I have a right battle on my hands. These sneering little snides are not fit to speak the name of these excellent, compassionate... doing that which they took their Oath to do! I am disgusted at the shower that passes as doctors today.

Anyway, have a good weekend - onward and upward, eh? :-) xx

There seems to be no doctor especially Endocrinologists and the doctors who would have trained in clinical symtpoms alone are probably long retired. It is the suffering patients who don't have internet must struggle daily due to being underdosed or developing other more serious problems and are completely unaware.

There was no champion after Dr S. If he hadn't been pursued for making people well as he was taught as a student, he might still be here getting people well again. He wouldn't succumb to bullying.

shaws, I am mortified at the current situation within medicine in general and endocrinology in particular. I have no clue where this is all going to go for people... ill enough, without more of this ongoing foul conduct at the hand of doctors. There are a few out there who speak out... but not enough.

For a good while now 'endocrinology' seems to have taken so against Dr S and that would also seem to have spurred them on to really attack the whole hypothyroid arena. It took me soo long to find out what was wrong and there are still outlying aspects that are worsening over time, but for someone just left to their own devices - little contact with the outside world - I shudder in horror that the great forefathers of hypothyroidism, apparently, will finally be shovelled into a cavernous whole and to be forgotten forever :-( Worst thing is, one of our local teaching hospitals is rather famous for injecting sheep hormone... yet today treats some of us barbarically: I could not be more sickened!

This is also from Dr Lowe as he disliked enormously that doctors were being prevented by their Associations from prescribing what was best for their patients.

I am in England and am so shocked that a country like Canada is doing this. To me, Canada seems like a liberal, open minded and civilised society. As you have no doubt read on this forum, there are massive problems here in England getting anything other than levothyroxine. It makes for even more stress when we are fighting through for optimum health. Good luck x

I am shocked myself, I never expected to call for a refill ( I have one dose left-but I have never had any problems before) and be told it's a nation wide back order, and they just found out when the weekly order came in. How can they not inform people? This will be effecting so many, as doctors do prescribe NDT all the time here. I am so sorry that the UK has such problems, and I'm so grateful for all of your guys' imput!!

What are the laws in Canada about importing medicines from abroad? Mentioning no sites, there's an internet pharmacy in the USA from which I buy my own NDT.
