Hi. I'm wondering if my ferritin levels and B 12 level is low and should I be concerned .

Ferritin is 36. 5.272

B12. 250

These two have been going down for over a year now and my nurse practitioner says all my bloodwork is fine. I'm having a lot of issues and I'm trying to find out why

Hi, hopefully one of the better informed members will be able to give you more detail. However best if you can give the ranges as well as that will help with advice. Did you have any other check like Vit D and folate?

Your results are similar to my last check up - Ferritin 35 (range 30.0 - 400.0) and B12 295 ((197.0 - 771.0) and I was told by members on here that was dire. I also had a Vit D deficiency and currently being supplemented for that. At my next check up I will mention the other results to my doctor who was not concerned last time as they were "in range"!

From what others have said these should be a optimum levels Ferritin at least 70 ideally 100. B12 should be near the top of the range over 500.

Hope that helps until someone else can comment :-)

Thank you for your comments. I didn't think the numbers were good and I mentioned it to my doctor and she wanted to try and take care the palpitations first before looking at anything else. She did another blood test but only tested my TSH which has gone from 194 to 168. I'm not sure if this is bad or not.

I'm not familiar with your TSH numbers mine are TSH 0.05 (0.27 - 4.2) and should be below 1 (and not to worry if it is below range as free T4 is the important one that needs to be near the top of its range). Always remember to ask your doctor to print out your results, that way you will know what the ranges are and post on here.

Update from me - my Vit D is now in range Ferritin still below 70 so now on a dose of iron tablets and supplementing vit D myself. My B12 has gone down again so that will be the next thing to challenge once my ferritin is back in order :-)

Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply, I get my results online even before my doctor does I am waiting for her reply as to why she only tested my TSH this time. I'm going for ultra sound in June for my heart and thyroid. Then I hope she can figure out what to do. Doesn't sound like she wants me to try to self medicate for low B12 or ferritin until this is done. Do I have to watch my mood swings. Lol

You sound like me! My ferritin was 27 (range 10-232) and my B-12 was 240 (range 200-1100). My idiot GP said that was not deficient but 2 Endos both say it is. If you watch the YouTube videos about B-12 you will hear that under 300 is critical, and you can even have symptoms of dementia or madness! Japan's normal reference range only starts at 500, so YES, you're deficient! Supplementing is best with methylcobalamin, over cyanocobalamin. If you're supplementing and have stomach issues of lack of intrinsic factor, then B-12 shots are the way to go. I am currently waiting for blood test results so my Endo can decide what we will do, but in the meantime I am taking B-12 supplements in chewable tablet form.

What were the ranges for Ferritin?

B12 so low! Should be way above 500 lots of thought from specialists that between 800 & 1000 is best. Under 500 can start to cause neurological damage. Grrr damn medical profession...

My ferritin was 36. 5-292

Oops ferritin was 5-272

Trouble is unless you have a very clued up gp, he/she is unlikely to supplement you if you are "in range", so you will have to supplement yourself, mind you, you will get a better quality of supplement if you source it yourself

I am trying to find out why I'm having palpitations and skipped beats with dizziness and my head feels pressure sometimes like it will explode. Then after I received my results I compared them to the to sets from last year and noticed my ferritin has dropped from 55. 10-291 and my B12 was 374. So I know I need help.

Yes it seems like you are slightly anaemic for some reason. It's important to check out why that could be. And you certainly feel the difference in your health, it's just that phrase from the gp practice we all usually get, "fine" when you know you are not. You could push the concern you have about levels dropping and your symptoms and ask to see a specialist, either haematologist or endocrinologist if you are under one. It may be a loss of intrinsic factor due to age or bacterial stomach infection such as h pylori bacter that stops you absorbing B12 for instance. Equally you could supplement yourself and go back and explain the difference it makes, if any and get retested to show how the supplements make you feel.

Your B12 may or may not be a problem - the serum test is far from being useful as a single indicator - low end would result in missing 25% of people who are ... but also picking up 5% of people who aren't. What was the range and the units? and what are your symptoms?

Evaluating symptoms is admittedly very difficult given the overlap with thyroid and other conditions - including iron deficiency

Personally would suggest sorting out the iron first.

Please be aware that many of the numbers currently being quoted on this post are ones that relate to people that are being treated for B12 deficiency - when the range does change - and tends to be much higher because of a reaction to high levels of B12 in serum.

Lots more on B12 on the PAS forum

Hi my B12 is 250 my ferritin is 36. 5-272

Headaches palpitations that can last anywhere from one hour to twenty four hours skips beats don't sleep well exhausted all the time blurry eyesight left ankle swollen all the time. Have been checked for thyroid issues but nothing to cause concern. I did mention to my NP that my numbers were low so she is checking into it today.
