Should I take magnesium

Leesy121 profile image

I'm waiting to hear from the doctor because I have high TSH and also high free t4, I've previously put these results on this site. My t3 is quite low, would I benefit from taking magnesium?

Have you had vitamin d level tested? Couldn't see it on previous posting.

If not can get done via

vitamindtest.org.uk

Suggest you do that first. No point testing magnesium- it always comes back in range on standard test

Are you improving your low ferritin

I've had it tested but not got the results back yet. If that is in range, is there no need to supplement magnesium?

I'm phoning my doctor tomorrow about ferritin, I think she will say it's fine. If she does, what can I take to improve levels?

It's possible... do you know your magnesium and calcium levels? The two are supposed to be in balance so it's good to know that. Do you get muscle twitching? Eye twitching etc? Any bone problems? These are things that magnesium helps with, but also when taken along with vit D3 and K2, and possibly calcium for some people.

As a side effect some people find it helps them sleep better at night.

No I don't but I'm having problems sleeping.

dang in reply toLeesy121

It's not for sleeping problems, that's just a side effect of the magnesium, that's' why most people take it at night before going to sleep 🙂

Sorry I meant to write this in one post. Have you had your cortisol levels tested? From what I know that's usually checked with sleep issues. Are you overly tired? Or having insomnia? These things are very closely related to thyroid issues and also being under or over medicated, or possibly the wrong type of medication (not everyone can handle levothyroxine alone).

Leesy121 profile image
Leesy121 in reply todang

No how do I do this?

dang in reply toLeesy121

There are other members on this forum who know more about cortisol than myself. I know there is some sort of saliva swab test (if I'm not mistaken) that can be done at home and is reliable. I've done my tests at the doctors via blood sample but from my understanding those results don't give a proper image of one's levels throughout the day. Search on this forum for 'cortisol' or 'insomnia' 'sleep issues' etc and you will find a LOAD of good information. And a more precise answer to this question (sorry 😓)

After many decades of complaining being over tired and fobbed off by GPs and always with lowest figure in Thyroid tests, after having to make a strop, got referred to young Endo consultant at Thyroid clinc. She ran a far more comprehensive blood test - this does show low Cortisol. Waiting to go for morning of tests

Good thing you finally caught it! I don't know so much about cortisol but one thing I hear over and over again is that meditation can have a huge impact on balancing cortisol levels are fixing sleep issues. We're all too stressed these days, and if we don't take the time to learn to calm down our bodies aren't going to just do it for us :)

Its barely mentioned in books on Thyroid, tho its part of the 'circuit' so to speak and interacts with Pituitary and Hypothalamus. Hard to find out more and its not Adrenal Fatigue l gather. l was fortunate to see an amazing Healer for 20 yrs so l gave up on medics. Sadly he has passed unexpectedly and am stuck with Medics again. l doubt l cd find anyone better or more open than current Consultant, and if I move as intended l shall come back 100 miles to see her- after all the experiences l read on here about change of Endo consultants! l now know why when we did Reflexology training, l always 'hit the roof' when they touches Adrenals - but its very hard to judge your own reaction and compare with others. Stress always goes to kidney area. l do meditate and have done so for many years - on and off

Sorry to hear about your healer's passing. Yes it though when your support system breaks or changes, but from the sounds of it it seem like you really have your head on your shoulders and you are open and understanding, so this whole time you've most likely been your own biggest support. So no matter where you go in life you'll be strong enough to handle it and find a new support system that you can trust. It's really great that your meditating, that's my biggest weakness, I used to but I haven't done it in years now, I keep putting off the breathing exercises that my Naturopath gave me to do... 😓

l went to see the Healer via another lady who had done the Reflexology course; life changing. He worked on me weekly for over a year on Pituitary, and l was his longest client it turned out; couldnt do it o/night as been wrong for so long and then saw him 3-4x year for a boost. l like to think it was far better than seeing a Neurosurgeon and having burr holes drilled thru skull! l'd had the very worst PMT ever heard of, but thru him l sailed thru Meno thank heavens. He had clients coming hundreds of miles to see him; there really were miracles. l've had little choice but to try and solve my own - wish l'd made more noise before, as it is life wrecking. lts very easy not to bother to meditate - prob when we most need it, but l did start again few weeks ago

Wow sounds like quite the healer, its a good thing you were able to get the help while it was available. I could use someone like that myself, I'm currently having to do long distance over the phone meetings with my Naturopath, he lives in Canada, I live in Germany 😓 it makes it pretty difficult

My that's quite an arrangement. l knew little about healers when l first went, another lady from Brighton used to take a car full to him in Bournemouth each month; l had no idea but was on the last ebb and nowhere else to go. He cd feel your problem in his body and likely tell you what was wrong. And quite a character; he got into it as he went for a joke to Spiritualist Church and they told him he had a problem ie brain tumour and cured it o/night thru it coming out his nose etc. Of course, there was the late great Harry Edwards nr Guildford in 50's/60's but it never occurred to me in very young days to try it then - as noone l knew talked about it. ln fact if you look up Harry Edwards Sanctuary on the web, they can help with Absent Healing and help many things and l have used them.

I went yesterday to see a new Healer/problem solver near here - energetic-wisdom.co.uk - who went on from Osteopath. l think he has helped by using kinesiology and the body to indicate 'weak or strong' in statements made, then strengthens body whilst we hold a disc of his. Some work involves vibrations we give off! Hardly believable he was going to use a phrase on 'Adrenals' - where my problem appears to be, but l asked to leave that one until l have the extra morning of tests and a true Diagnosis at the Hospital. lt will be wonderful if Tony can get that right without me having to take 'hormones' and l gather it is rather guesswork to get it right. He is more expensive than l am used to and does charge for Distant healing and a report. There are some good testimonials on his site, and l have spoken to one lady who is full of praise. I suspect he works differently from most

Wait until you get your vitamin D test back if you want to take oral supplements. Too much magnesium can cause diarrhoea.

In the meantime if you take baths get some epsom salts and have a soak in that before you go to bed making sure the water isn't too hot when you start. Epsom salts contain magnesium.

Also if your iron, vitamin D or B vitamin levels are too low, believe it or not, while you may feel tired you will have issues sleeping.
