I went to my GP today and asked why they don't test T3 she replied that T3 isn't important ,only the tsh and T4 are.

sueanddave Your GP is like most doctors then, they don't know much about thyroid disease.

Maybe you can educate her about how important it actually is. Tell her that T4 is a pro hormone, a storage hormone, that converts to T3 which is the active hormone that every cell in our bodies need.

Someone posted an article from US ,a while back ,that stated that T4 was active to some extent and importantly so and should not be dismissed as of only useful insofar as it converts to T3 .

Sometimes I think I'm going mad. When I ask why my hands and face are so swollen I've got vitiligo I'm depressed etc the prescription is handed to me for anti depressents and apparently all the other symptoms aren't connected with my thyroid

In an ideal word you could say your doctor is correct and that taking extra T4 would convert to T3 and it would be business as usual but you have a problem so highly likely nothing is working as it should and your doctor should be trying to find out why and where this is happening and more importantly rectifying the problem!

It may be a case of saving up and getting private testing done. I've had a few done myself but kindly the doctor suggested the nurse took my bloods but thankfully my doctor knows she hasn't a clue but has tried to be helpful with tests the NHS won't do.

Blue Horizon are highly recommended for testing.

GP's don't get bonuses for prescribing medication, that is highly illegal...

I haven't heard of bonuses for prescriptions. I do know of other practices where pharma corps are able to give medical practices funding for educational programs, this could be considered a type of bribe if you wish I suppose. But to give a bonus per prescription is incredibly illegal. I will note I'm a Canadian living in Germany so I don't know the law in the UK. But if it's legal in the U.K. then I don't know what to say, the system there must have really failed somewhere.

My gp told me t3 was irrelevant when I asked for it to be done along with the t4 and tsh and that the lab won't do it even if she requested it .she didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I said I wanted to see if I was converting t4 to t3 i gave up and had private bloodtest done.

I think I'll have to do the same

I think I misunderstood, I thought you were talking about pharmaceutical companies paying doctors bonuses per prescription. Sorry about that. However I also knew nothing of this scheme, like I said I don't live in the U.K., but it does sound like quite a mess 😓
