Probiotics

In my quest to have the gut of a new born baby I think I need probiotics. However, in the past when I've taken them my tummy gets distended and I feel very "windy". I know this is supposed to be temporary but it puts me off.

Is anyone else like this and if so have you found any that have helped?

Cheers :-)

I use Innopure Pro and Prebiotics. I don't get distended or farty on them. If I take two a day, I do have very good bowel movements... ahem!

Hi there!

I'm sort of doing the same thing. At the moment I'm taking capsule form probiotics, a 14 strain one called Bio-Kult. I also eat fermented food daily, not much, in the form of homemade sauerkraut and a carrot and ginger one for bio-variety. When the box is finished I'll just stick to fermented foods. They are fun to make!

At first I was a bit gassy too and I always had a problem with bloating but this has significantly decreased since I've stopped drinking cow's milk and changed to almond milk.

As far as I can gather if you get wind/bloat you should decrease the dose of probiotic a bit, in other words take a lower number of "x" billion bacteria and slowly build up as your gut gets re-populated with the good guys. If you do fermented foods build that up gradually from a forkfull a day and increase if all's well.

Even though they are "good" bacteria it can overwhelm your gut a bit at first and there are things going on with hopefully the die-off of the bad bacteria.

Maybe someone who has far more knowledge than me can hopefully comment too!

Yes I've read that going for mega strong probiotics isn't always a very good idea. Baby steps is probably the way to go!

I've looked at Kefir millions of times but just can't get myself motivated to make it...probably because I'm worried after all that effort it might play havoc with me. Somebody somewhere on the net recommended just having a tablespoon or so at a time and I think that's probably good advice :-)

If you have pets, they usually like kefir (next door's dog and my cat both love it), so it wouldn't be wasted if you didn't like it and you could see your grains again on ebay.

I've had severe IBS despite a history of probiotics and such, and have had to be on low FODMAP diet (under trained NHS dietician). FODMAPS (Fermenting Oligo-Di-Monosaccharides And Polyols) are carbs in vegetable-based foods and dairy that can pass through to lower intestine and ferment there, causing bloating, gas and worse. Probiotics can cause same symptoms, as they break down to form a FODMAP. e.g. Saccharomyces boullardii, the non-colonising bacteria that are used to repopulate gut after illness prior to introducing more weighty critters, break down to lactose - a FODMAP - so symptoms result. Test e.g. lactose-free and it may demonstrate that's your problem (usually temporary - low FODMAP diets are usually only for 6-8 weeks before reintroduction). Have a look at Monash University website (whose research and application this is) for ALL the low down what to avoid, what you can eat, recipes and so forth. After a break from FODMAPS it should be easier to reintroduce probiotics without symptoms.

Hi Agastache, I'm doing the Auto Immune Paleo which omits a lot of high fodmap foods so hopefully I should be OK. If I don't see any difference after this punishing regime I will definitely consider it :-)

Try Saccharomyces Boulardii and avoid anything with inulin.
