NDT - Nature Throid

Hi, please can anyone tell me if it is possible to get Nature Throid or other NDT without prescription and if I can self-medicate? My doctor only wants me on Levothyroxine which unfortunately gives me bad side effects. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, Lindajrst.

If you post your recent thyroid results with ranges (figures in brackets after results) members will advise how to transition from Levothyroxine to NDT.

How long have you been taking Levothyroxine?

Thanks for your reply. I've stopped taking Levothyroxine due to the side effects. (was 8 years on it then 2 years off it and then 6 months back on again - off it again for 3 months now.) I had a blood test this week and saw the consultant today. My TSH is a little above the normal range (I didn't get the exact numbers) so I'm guessing it was 5.something. The Doc won't let me try T3 or NDT but wanted me back on a low dose of T4. I said no as I feel better on nothing than on T4 only. Hope this all makes sense! I would love to try NDT but can't get a prescription for it so was wondering if I could purchase it without one.

When I came off levothyroxine I took sea kelp and had really good energy levels.

That's really helpful, thanks. It had just occurred to me to perhaps try some supplements instead. I haven't tolerated iodine etc. too well in the past but it's probably worth a try again. Was wondering about magnesium and selenium too.

Magnesium I heard is good for muscle recovery, levothyroxine promotes muscle weakness. I've taken magnesium for a good while but still have muscle weasweakness.

That would explain why my arms and legs felt so weak

on the levothyroxine then. After 3 months off it I am better but still not as good as I should be. I might try the magnesium too. Thanks.

Be very careful about supplementing with iodine. It's a hot topic on this forum and lots of people have found it backfires on them. Do searches for posts mentioning iodine on here.

If you decide you do want to self medicate post the question where to buy NDT and people will pm you where they buy from 😊 Blue horizon via Thyroid UK do thyroid 10 or11 tests that give great pictures of what you may or may not need to supplement. Ex my B12 and iron were really low, plus of course show your TSH, T4 T3 and anti bodies. I self medicate but did a huge amount of research first. Good luck
