Help understanding bloods please....

I've just had results from my latest blood test.

My doctor requested T3 (Second doc to do so at my request) but the clinic has refused.

GP also tested for diabetes and coeliac's disease hence the other results.

GP has put me on 305mg of iron twice a day and 5mg of folic acid. She's happy to re-test thyroid in 6wks and will call the clinic to make sure they do freeT3 but I'm impatient and want to get on...should I try a private T3 test and what sort of costs will I be looking at?

Thanks for your time in reading this and any suggestions/help gratefully received

Your results are very hard to read and I think other posters will have difficulty reading them.

What I can work out is that you are low in vitamin B12 and folate however as your levels are not under the range the NHS will not pay for any supplements.

Therefore you should supplement B12 by taking lozenges either Jarrows or Solgar which you can get from Amazon.co.uk

Then get a good B complex supplement which again either Jarrows or Solgar are good brands. You want a supplement that is not specifically aimed at women so it has a balance of B12 and folate, and has more than the RDA of B vitamins in them.

Edited to say please follow this if buying through amazon - healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

So annoying I can only post one picture grrrr

That's why it's generally requested people type them out in the form of:

test test result (range)

Anyway lab techs are highly qualified and are given the discretion not to do a particular test if the results don't warrant it e.g. all the related ones are in range. This is again to save the NHS money. So while a doctor can ask for a test the lab can refuse to do it.

Hopefully the new pic is better?

Yep can read the folate result. It is definitely too low but as pointed out by Greygoose get your own B vitamin supplements as they will be better quality.

Mols_Bols1,

You can order private blood tests from Blue Horizon and Genova via thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

With a low reading like that, you should be taking 5000 mcg sublingual methylcobalamin (B12), with a B complex - as bluebug says - but make sure it's got methylfolate in it. Folic acid is not much good, but doctors always prescribe the cheapest form.

No point in just ordering an FT3 test on its own. You want FT4 and FT3 done at the same time. That way, you will be able to see if you are converting.

So the iron tabs the GP's given are no good? or should I take them along with the B complex?

Well, I don't know what the GP has given you, you just said 'iron'.

Sorry, don't understand your question. Should you take what with the B complex? Iron? No, iron is best taken alone. You take the B12 with the B complex. All the B vits work together, so you need to take them all like that, to keep them balanced.

Thanks for your help.

I'm sorry maybe I wasn't clear, the GP has given me 305mg of iron tabs to take twice a day.. the name on the bottle is Ferrous Fumarate, If that helps?

My question is does the B Complex you suggested already contain the iron or should I take the iron tabs also?

Mols_Bols1 A B Complex contains B vitamins. Check the label of the brand you're interested in before you buy. Iron is a mineral and won't be in a B Complex.
