help understanding bloods

Hi, I was put on 75mg of thyroxine one day, 100 mg the next day after the previous blood results. After the latest blood results I’ve been put on to 2 grams of NDT per day

Can someone explain the doctors thinking, please. All she said was I wasn’t converting t4 to t3. Thanks

So these bloods were taken after 6-8 weeks on 100mcgs levo is that right?

Did you do the test as per the protocol recommended here? Test at 9am, fasting, last levo dose 24hrs before the blood draw (if you’re taking Levo) & no biotin containing supplements for 3-7 days (Biotin can interfere with thyroid blood results as it is used in the testing process)?

Free T4 (fT4) 15.8 pmol/L (12 - 22) 38.0%

Free T3 (fT3) 4.3 pmol/L (3.1 - 6.8) 32.4%

Your TSH was still pretty high in range at 3.23. Most people feel well with a TSH of 1 or just under so you could have just increased your Levo a bit more, possibly several times.

Although your FT3 isn't that high at the moment, if you did increase levo it would hopefully get to where you need it.

It looks to me like you are converting well at that point but there are some more recent results that I can't find.

We really need to see the actual numbers for your vitamin results if possible.

I'd recommend continuing going up the doses with Levo for now and see where that takes you but you need OPTIMAL vitamins too.

Going by that range your folate is only 15% of its range and B12 42%.

Recommend taking an active/methyl (should say on label) B complex which contains 400mcgs folate (also B12). This B complex has all the right vitamins at a not unreasonable cost for 90 days supply. amazon.co.uk/Liposomal-Soft...

Thank you. These tests were taken by a private doctor that rus a thyroid clinic. Why wouldn’t she have said?

Jaydee1507Administrator in reply toBigfraz76

Maybe she just looked at the numbers and didn't do the percentages.

I was just going to ask where you managed to get a doctor to do a thorough blood test? How much does she charge you and what is her location please?GPs won't test much at all.

I believe this is a private doctor that Bigfraz76 sees.

Private tests are available, see link for companies offering private blood tests & discount codes, some offer a blood draw service at an extra cost. thyroiduk.org/help-and-supp...

The cheapest test currently available is from Randox Heath which includes antibodies if you're OK with finger prick tests. randoxhealth.com/at-home/Th...

There is also a new company offering walk in & mail order blood tests in the Crawley, Hove and Reigate areas. onedaytests.com/products/ul...

yes it’s a private clinic in London. My own GP is not much help regarding all this

Most recent results

FT4: 18.6 pmol/l (Range 12 - 22)

Ft4 is 66.00% through range

FT3: 4.4 pmol/l (Range 3.1 - 6.8)

Ft3 only 35.14% through range

Was test done early morning, around 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Which brand levothyroxine are you taking

Looking back through previous posts…..can’t see ANY folate, ferritin or B12 results

For any replacement thyroid hormones to work well it’s ESSENTIAL to have OPTIMAL vitamin levels

Vitamin D needs retesting twice year when supplementing

Suggest you get all four vitamins tested NOW

personally I would get next dose increase in levothyroxine and all four vitamins tested and optimal before considering NDT

NDT is vastly more expensive than levothyroxine

Cheaper alternative is to add small doses of T3 ……if Ft3 remains low ….once vitamin levels are optimal

Looking at previous posts your weight at 78 kilo ……likely daily dose levothyroxine is at least 100mcg per day

And your high TSH shows you have plenty of room to increase levothyroxine

Suggest 100mcg daily and retest again in another 6-8 weeks

With serum B12 result below 500, (Or active B12 below 70) recommended to be taking a separate B12 supplement and add a separate vitamin B Complex after a week

Then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), you may be able to reduce then stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

If Vegetarian or vegan likely to need ongoing separate B12 few times a week

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

Thorne currently difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate methyl folate supplement and continue separate B12

Improving low vitamin levels frequently helps improve conversion rates of Ft4 to Ft3

Did the testing company know you are male as I see you have had female hormones measured! I believe the reference range for ferritin is different for male/female. SlowDragon have I got that right?

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toGingernut44

Ferritin range correct for male at 30-400

Ferritin for pre menopause females 30-150
